Microsoft Surface Repair Questions, Answered
Charging delivers extra heat into the device on top of whatever workload it's running. If the thermal paste has dried out (common on Pro 4-9 after 2-3 years) the cooling can't keep up. Fan cleaning + thermal paste reapplication brings idle and charging temps back to normal range in a few hours.
Surface Book 2 has both a discrete GPU in the base and the tablet's CPU running - charging on top pushes total heat over what the cooling can manage when paste is degraded. Standard fix: paste reapplication and fan service on both halves.
Every 3-4 years for normal use. If you do heavy CPU work (video editing, large code compiles) consider every 2 years to maintain peak performance. Dubai's dust + heat shorten this interval compared to cooler climates.
Surface Pro 4, Pro 6, Pro 7 and Pro 8 are the most common in our workshop. Surface Book 2/3 (because of the dual-board cooling) and Surface Laptop 3/4 (Alcantara traps heat) close behind. Every one is fixable.
