Use Microsoft PowerToys to Remap the Key

Microsoft Powertoys suggests an easy way to change the function of the Copilot Key.

  • Go to the official website now to download and install Microsoft PowerToys.
  • Open PowerToys and access the Keyboards manager.
  • Click Remap a key and select the Copilot key.
  • Assign a new function to the key or disable it by choosing none.
  • Confirm your changes now and restart your computer as needed to ensure that everything functions properly.

Disable the Key Using Windows Registry (Advanced Method)

Users experienced with modifying the Windows registry can use this method to completely disable the key.

  • To open the Registry Editor, press Windows + R, type regedit, and then hit Enter.
  • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout.
  • Right-click and select New > Binary Value.
  • Name it Scancode Map and enter the important values to disconnect the Copilot key.
  • Make sure to exit the Registry Editor right away and restart your computer to apply the changes.

Disable Copilot Through Windows Settings

Although this would not disable the key itself, it prevents Copilot from launching.

  • Open Settings and go to personalization > Taskbar.
  • Search the Copilot toggle and shut it off.
  • This will stop the key from opening the Copilot app, but the key will remain.

If you are on Windows 11 Pro, you can disable Copilot using the group policy settings.

  • Press Win + R, type gpedit.msc, and press enter.

  • Locate the turn-off Windows copilot settings, verify it and switch it to enabled.
  • Apply the changes and restart your PC.
