Key Takeaways
- Microsoft publishes service guides and replacement parts for recent Surface Pro models but none for any Surface Book.
- A Surface Book has two halves, two batteries and a connector hinge, so its diagnosis has to test the screen, the base and the link between them.
- Microsoft's driver and firmware servicing has ended for every Surface Book and continues for Surface Pro 7+, Pro 8 and later.
- Force restart, run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit and update Windows before booking a repair on either family.
Surface Pro and Surface Book are repaired in very different ways. Recent Surface Pro models are designed for service: Microsoft publishes service guides and sells replacement parts such as the display, battery, SSD and motherboard. No Surface Book model has a Microsoft service guide or self-repair parts, the screen and keyboard base are two separate halves joined by a connector hinge, and Microsoft's driver and firmware servicing has ended for every Surface Book. That makes Surface Book repair component-level work, while many Surface Pro repairs are a module swap.
The Short Version
| Surface Book (1st gen, Book 2, Book 3) | Surface Pro (recent models) | |
|---|---|---|
| Build | Detachable screen on a keyboard base | Single tablet with kickstand and separate keyboard |
| Microsoft service guide | None published | Published for Pro 7+ and later, plus a Pro 7 kickstand guide |
| Microsoft self-repair parts | None listed | Listed by model, broadest from Pro 9 onward |
| Batteries | Two | One |
| Driver and firmware servicing | Ended for all models | Ongoing for Pro 7+, Pro 8 and later |
| Typical repair approach | Component-level work | Often a whole module replaced |
How the Two Are Built
Surface Book. The screen half is a tablet that lifts off the keyboard base when you press the Detach key and the light turns green. Microsoft's detach article explains that both batteries need enough charge before it will release, and that the hinge carries three connectors that link the two halves. On Surface Book 3 there are two Surface Connect ports, one on the base and one on the tablet. Because power, data and the detach system all pass through the hinge, faults can sit in the screen half, in the base, or in the link between them, and the diagnosis has to test each.
Surface Pro. Everything sits in one tablet: screen, battery, board and storage, with a kickstand on the back. The keyboard is a separate accessory that clips on magnetically. There is one battery and no detach mechanism, so a fault is usually inside one body.
What Microsoft Publishes for Each
Microsoft's self-repair page lists replacement parts by Surface Pro model, and the range grows with each generation:
- Surface Pro 7: kickstand.
- Surface Pro 7+: kickstand, removable SSD and SSD door.
- Surface Pro 8: kickstand, SSD door, removable SSD and display.
- Surface Pro 9, Pro 10 and Pro 11th Edition: a long list including the display, battery, Surface Connect port, speakers, cameras, thermal module and motherboard.
- Surface Pro 12-inch: a similar list with a USB-C charging port in place of Surface Connect.
Microsoft's service guide downloads cover these Surface Pro models. No Surface Book appears on either the self-repair page or the service guide list. Microsoft also says its battery replacement service, which lists the Surface Book 3 and several Surface Pro models, is not offered in China, India or MEA, the region that includes the UAE.
Microsoft notes that fitting a replacement component does not by itself affect its Limited Warranty, but damage caused by a repair from someone other than Microsoft or one of its approved service providers is not covered by Microsoft's warranty.
Update Support
Microsoft's lifecycle page lists these end dates for driver and firmware servicing:
- Surface Book: November 13, 2021.
- Surface Book 2: June 30, 2023.
- Surface Book 3: April 1, 2025.
- Surface Pro 7: October 30, 2025.
- Surface Pro 8: October 5, 2027.
- Surface Pro 9: October 25, 2028.
- Surface Pro 11th Edition (Snapdragon): September 10, 2030.
After that date, a device stops getting new Surface firmware and drivers but keeps receiving Windows updates under the Windows lifecycle policy.
Common Faults and What the Repair Involves
Surface Book
- Screen will not detach or the base is not detected: often the hinge connectors or the detach software, sometimes the mechanism itself.
- Base battery not charging: the base battery, its charging path, or the link through the hinge.
- Cracked screen: there is no Microsoft replacement part to order, so it is careful component work on the screen half.
- NVIDIA graphics missing on models that have them: drivers first, then the connection and the board.
Surface Pro
- Cracked screen: on Pro 9 and later, Microsoft lists the display as a replaceable part.
- Battery wear or swelling: listed as a part on recent models.
- Kickstand loose or broken: listed as a part from Pro 7 onward.
- Not charging: the Surface Connect or USB-C port is a listed part on recent models.
Checks Before You Book a Repair
- Force restart. Surface Book 2, Book 3 and Surface Pro 5th Gen or later: hold the power button for about 20 seconds until the logo appears. Surface Book (1st gen) and Surface Pro 4 or older: hold volume up and power together for at least 15 seconds, release, wait 10 seconds, then press power.
- Run the Surface app or the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit. Microsoft says the toolkit tests components including the power supply, battery, display and sound.
- Run Windows Update and install any Surface firmware and drivers offered.
- Surface Book detach problems: check Surface DTX is enabled in Task Manager startup apps, charge both halves, and clean the hinge connectors as Microsoft describes. Our Surface Book not detaching guide walks through it.
- Back up your files to OneDrive or an external drive before any repair.
Which Is Worth Repairing?
A single fault on a recent Surface Pro is usually a contained repair because the parts are designed to come out. A Surface Book repair depends more on the diagnosis, since there are two halves, two batteries and a connector hinge to test. Our decision guides go further: is a Surface Book worth repairing and is a Surface Pro worth repairing.
We work on both families at Concord Tower, Al Sufouh 2: Surface Book repair in Dubai and Surface Pro repair in Dubai. Screens, batteries and Type Cover ports are usually same day; board-level work usually takes 48 to 72 hours, with a 90-day warranty on the repair.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Surface Book harder to repair than a Surface Pro?
Generally yes. Microsoft publishes service guides and replacement parts for recent Surface Pro models, so many faults are fixed by swapping a module. No Surface Book has a published guide or self-repair parts, and its detachable screen, two batteries and connector hinge mean more component-level work and a more careful diagnosis.
Which Surface Pro parts does Microsoft sell for self-repair?
It depends on the model. Surface Pro 7 lists the kickstand, Pro 7+ adds the removable SSD and its door, and Pro 8 adds the display. From Pro 9 onward the list includes the display, battery, charging port, cameras, speakers, thermal module and motherboard. Microsoft says availability varies by country and changes over time.
Why does my Surface Book screen not detach?
Microsoft's article lists the usual causes: one of the two batteries is too low, the Surface DTX software is disabled at startup, or the three hinge connectors are dirty. Charge both halves, enable Surface DTX in Task Manager, clean the connectors as Microsoft describes and restart. If it still will not release, the mechanism needs checking.
Do Surface Book and Surface Pro still get updates?
Microsoft has ended driver and firmware servicing for Surface Book, Book 2 and Book 3, and for Surface Pro 7, Pro X and older. Surface Pro 7+, Pro 8 and later are still in their servicing period. All of them keep receiving Windows updates under the Windows lifecycle policy for the version of Windows they run.
