Key Takeaways
- Rule out the charger, smart charging, Battery Limit and the battery driver before assuming a Surface Go battery has failed.
- The Surface Diagnostic Toolkit shows the designed capacity, current capacity and wear level of the battery.
- Stop using and do not charge a Surface Go whose battery has visibly swollen.
- On Surface Go 4 the battery is replaced with the chassis after the glued display is removed, so it is a workshop job.
A Surface Go battery needs replacing when it is swollen, no longer detected, or has worn to the point where it no longer lasts the day you need. Before that, rule out the charger, the charging settings and the driver, because several of Microsoft's own features stop charging early on purpose. Then check the battery's health with Microsoft's tool. On Surface Go 4, Microsoft's service guide reaches the battery by removing a glued screen, so replacement is a workshop job.
Signs the Battery Is Wearing Out
- Battery life has dropped well below what it used to be with the same apps.
- The Surface Go shuts down when you unplug it, even though it shows charge.
- Windows shows a red X on the battery icon, meaning the battery is not detected.
- It will not charge past a low level on a known-good charger.
- The screen lifts from the frame, the back bulges, or it rocks on a flat table.
A swollen battery comes first. Microsoft recommends you stop using a Surface whose battery has visibly expanded beyond the enclosure, and handle it without pressing on or puncturing it. Do not charge it.
Charging Checks to Try First
- Try another socket and cable. Surface Go models such as Go 2 and Go 4 charge through USB-C or Surface Connect, so test both if you can. Make sure nothing is plugged into the charger's own USB port.
- Check the charger light. The light on the Surface Connect plug should be on whenever it is connected. If it stays off, the power supply may be faulty.
- Read the battery icon. A red X means the battery is not detected. An exclamation mark means the Surface is getting power, but not enough to charge, so use the power supply designed for it.
- Reinstall the battery driver. With the Surface Go plugged in, open Device Manager, expand Batteries, uninstall Surface Battery or Microsoft Surface ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, select Action > Scan for hardware changes, then restart.
- Install updates. Open the Surface app, expand Help & support, and install anything waiting through Windows Update. Microsoft says up-to-date firmware is the way to keep a battery reliable.
- Force a restart. Hold the power button for about 20 seconds until the logo appears, then release.
If it does not charge at all, our Surface Go charging guide covers the port and charger in more detail.
Settings That Look Like a Fault
Smart charging. When a Surface stays plugged in for long periods or runs warm, smart charging holds the battery below full. On Surface Go 3 and Go 4 running Windows 11, a heart icon appears over the battery icon; Microsoft says the original Surface Go and Go 2 support it without showing the heart. To charge fully, open the Surface app, go to Battery & charging and choose to charge to full.
Battery Limit. This UEFI setting stops charging at half of the battery's capacity, for a Surface Go that never leaves the charger. Microsoft lists it for every Surface Go. On Surface Go it sits in UEFI under Boot configuration > Kiosk Mode.
Battery Lifespan Saver. On Surface Go 2, Go 3 and Go 4, Microsoft says this feature can make small permanent reductions in charging voltage when it detects harmful use, trading a little capacity for a longer life.
Check the Battery Health
Install the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit from the Microsoft Store, or the Surface Repair Tool, which Microsoft supports on its latest models. The Diagnostic Toolkit shows the designed capacity, current capacity and wear level. Microsoft presents replacement for wear as optional, for when you want more battery life, so compare the result with how you use the Surface Go.
How a Surface Go Battery Is Replaced
Microsoft publishes a service guide for Surface Go 4, and its self-repair page lists a Go 4 battery. The guide shows why this is not a quick job:
- The tablet must be fully discharged and unplugged before it is opened.
- The display is bonded with adhesive and comes off with a debonding tool. Microsoft says not to use a heat gun or hair dryer.
- The display, antenna deck, cameras, SD slot, blade connector, motherboard and speakers come out before the battery.
- The battery is replaced together with the chassis, then everything is rebuilt with new adhesive.
- The serial number is on the original cover, so it has to be recorded before the old chassis goes.
- After the repair, Microsoft's Surface Diagnostic Toolkit validates the new battery, which needs a stable internet connection.
For Surface Go 2 and Go 3, Microsoft's published service guide covers the kickstand. Microsoft lists Go 2 and Go 3 for its paid battery replacement service, but says that service is not available in the Middle East and Africa region.
Microsoft's repair safety guidance also warns that non-genuine, reused or modified batteries can overheat, swell or leak, and that a battery showing damage must not be worked on further. Choose a repair that uses a correct battery and tests it afterwards.
Making the Battery Last
- Microsoft rates Surface devices for use and charging between 0°C and 35°C. Keep it out of hot cars and direct sun, where heat ages the battery.
- Avoid leaving it on the charger at full charge for long periods, or turn on Battery Limit if it stays plugged in.
- Before storing it for a long time, leave it at about half charge and check it now and then.
If the battery problem started after a spill, read the Surface Go water damage guide first.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I check my Surface Go battery health?
Install the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit from the Microsoft Store and open its battery section. It shows the designed capacity, the current capacity and the wear level. Newer models also work with the Surface Repair Tool. Microsoft presents replacement for wear as optional, so decide based on how long you need the battery to last.
Why does my Surface Go stop charging before full?
Smart charging may be holding the battery below full because it stays plugged in or runs warm. Go 3 and Go 4 show a heart icon on Windows 11, while the original Go and Go 2 do not. Battery Limit, set in UEFI under Kiosk Mode, stops charging at half capacity. Check both in the Surface app and UEFI first.
Can I replace a Surface Go battery myself?
It is not recommended. On Surface Go 4, Microsoft's service guide removes an adhesive-bonded display with a debonding tool, takes out the board and other parts, and replaces the battery with the chassis. It also validates the new battery online afterwards. A workshop repair comes with a written quote first and a 90-day warranty.
Is a swollen Surface Go battery dangerous?
Microsoft recommends you stop using a Surface whose battery has visibly expanded beyond the enclosure, and handle it without pressing on or puncturing it. Do not charge it or try to flatten the case. Keep it away from heat and anything flammable, and book a battery replacement so the swollen cell is removed safely.
