Microsoft Surface Go vs iPad Mini Dubai | Travel Guide

The Surface Go and the iPad mini are both small tablets, but they do different jobs. The Surface Go runs full Windows, has a built-in kickstand and a Type Cover keyboard port, and works like a small laptop. The iPad mini runs iPadOS, has a smaller and sharper screen, and is lighter, but Apple does not list one of its own keyboard cases for it. Specs differ by generation, so check your exact model before relying on any figure here.

Which Models This Compares

• Surface Go 3, the last Surface Go sold widely to consumers, and Surface Go 4, which Microsoft lists with Windows Pro for business customers.
• iPad mini with the A17 Pro chip, as listed on Apple's current tech specs page.

On a Surface, open the Surface app or go to Settings, System, About to see the model. On an iPad, go to Settings, General, About.

Battery ratings come from each maker's own testing and use different methods, so they are not a direct comparison. Microsoft says battery life varies significantly with settings and usage.

Software: Windows or iPadOS

This is the biggest difference.

• Surface Go runs Windows, so it can use desktop Windows programs, the full Microsoft 365 apps and school or work portals in a desktop browser. Surface Go 3 ships in S mode, which Microsoft says runs apps from the Microsoft Store and nothing else. You can switch out of S mode for free in Settings, System, Activation, but Microsoft says you cannot switch back.
• iPad mini runs iPadOS and installs apps from Apple's App Store. If your school, college or employer requires a specific Windows program, an iPad cannot run it.

The Surface Go uses entry-level processors. It suits notes, documents, browsing and video meetings rather than heavy editing or large spreadsheets.

Keyboard and Pen

• Surface Go: the Type Cover attaches to a dedicated port and is sold separately. Microsoft lists the Surface Go Type Cover and Surface Go Signature Type Cover for Go 3. The kickstand is built in, so it stands up on a desk without a case. Surface Pen, using the Microsoft Pen Protocol, is also sold separately.
• iPad mini: Apple lists support for Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C). Apple's keyboard guide lists its Magic Keyboard and Smart Keyboard cases for iPad, iPad Air and iPad Pro models, not for iPad mini; Apple says iPad works with Bluetooth keyboards.

If typing is most of what you do, the Surface Go is built around it. If you mostly read, sketch or take handwritten notes and want the lightest device, the iPad mini is smaller.

Updates

Microsoft's lifecycle page lists driver and firmware servicing for Surface Go 3 until October 5, 2027, and for Surface Go 4 until September 21, 2029. The original Surface Go and Surface Go 2 have passed their end dates. After servicing ends, a Surface keeps receiving Windows updates under the Windows lifecycle policy. Repair

• Surface Go 4: Microsoft publishes a service guide and parts list covering the display, battery and enclosure, kickstand, hinges, motherboard, card reader, Type Cover connector, cameras and speakers.
• Surface Go 2 and Go 3: Microsoft's published guide covers the kickstand replacement; other repairs need a workshop that works at component level.

Common Surface Go repairs are a cracked screen, a worn battery, a loose USB-C or Surface Connect port, and a Type Cover port that stops detecting the keyboard. Before booking, force restart by holding the power button for about 20 seconds until the logo appears, and run the Surface app or the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit. • Choose a Surface Go if you need Windows programs, a proper keyboard, a card slot and a built-in stand.
• Choose an iPad mini if you want the smallest, lightest tablet for reading, notes and media, and your apps are on iPadOS.
