Key Takeaways

  • Surface Laptop 6 for Business comes in 13.5-inch and 15-inch sizes with Intel Core Ultra 5 135H or Ultra 7 165H processors.
  • The 13.5-inch has one USB-C Thunderbolt 4 port and the 15-inch has two, and both also charge through Surface Connect.
  • The SSD is removable, which helps companies keep or recover data when a board fails.
  • Surface IT Toolkit supports Laptop 6 with Data Eraser, a UEFI Configurator and a Recovery Tool.

Surface Laptop 6 for Business is the Surface Laptop that Microsoft sold to business customers from the first Intel Core Ultra generation, sold in 13.5-inch and 15-inch sizes with Intel Core Ultra H-series processors and Windows 11 Pro. Its strengths for a company are a removable SSD, Intel x64 compatibility, Thunderbolt 4 and a longer list of replaceable parts than Surface Laptop 5. This guide sets out what it is according to Microsoft's spec sheet, what differs between the two sizes, how IT teams can manage and repair it, and how to look after a fleet in Dubai. It is drawn from Microsoft's documentation, not from testing the device.

Microsoft has since released Surface Laptop for Business (7th Edition) and (8th Edition), so if a supplier offers you a Surface Laptop for Business today, check which edition it is. Device information in the Surface app confirms the exact model of a unit you already own.

What It Is, per Microsoft

  • Processors: Intel Core Ultra 5 135H or Intel Core Ultra 7 165H, with an Intel AI Boost NPU.
  • Memory: 8GB LPDDR5, or 16GB, 32GB or 64GB LPDDR5x. Microsoft lists Intel Arc graphics on 16GB and larger configurations.
  • Storage: a removable Gen 4 SSD of 256GB, 512GB or 1TB.
  • Screens: 13.5-inch at 2256 x 1504, or 15-inch at 2496 x 1664, both 3:2 touchscreens with an anti-reflective finish.
  • Sign-in: Windows Hello face sign-in, plus a 1080p front camera with Windows Studio Effects.
  • Keyboard: backlit, with a Copilot key. Microsoft lists support for Microsoft Pen Protocol pens on the touchscreen.
  • Wireless: Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.
  • Software: shipped with Windows 11 Pro or Windows 10 Pro.

13.5-inch and 15-inch: What Differs

13.5-inch15-inch
USB-C with USB4 / Thunderbolt 4OneTwo
USB-A 3.1, audio jack, Surface ConnectYesYes
Smart card readerNoSelect configurations
Weight1.38 kg1.68 kg

The integrated smart card reader is listed for select 15-inch configurations in Black, and Microsoft's sheet names the US and Canada for it. A unit bought in the UAE is unlikely to have one, so check before planning card-based sign-in around it.

Both sizes charge through Surface Connect or USB-C. Microsoft lists a 39W supply with the 13.5-inch and fast charging from a 45W or higher Surface supply or USB-C PD charger. Because the 13.5-inch has a single USB-C port, a Surface Connect dock or charger keeps that port free for a monitor or accessory.

Managing It as an IT Team

  • Surface IT Toolkit supports Surface Laptop 6. It includes Data Eraser for wiping SSDs before reuse or disposal, a UEFI Configurator for firmware settings, and a Recovery Tool for building a USB recovery image.
  • Windows version: if any units shipped with Windows 10 Pro, check through Windows Update that they are now on Windows 11 Pro.
  • Firmware and drivers: keep Surface firmware current through Windows Update or your management tools, and use the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit before logging a hardware fault.

Repair and Serviceability

Microsoft lists more replaceable components for Laptop 6 than for Surface Laptop 5, and a built-in QR code links to repair instructions. Replacement components include:

  • Display assembly (with camera)
  • Keyboard assembly (with touchpad)
  • Removable SSD
  • Battery
  • Motherboard (processor and memory)
  • Surface Connect port, audio jack and speakers
  • Thermal module, enclosure and feet

For a business, the removable SSD matters most. If a board fails, the drive can usually be removed and its data read or kept, and Microsoft offers SSD retention so a company can keep the drive when a device goes back for service. Memory is part of the motherboard, so it cannot be upgraded later.

Looking After a Fleet in Dubai

Microsoft designs Surface devices to operate between 0 and 35 degrees Celsius and warns that heat speeds up battery ageing. For staff who drive between sites:

  • Ask staff never to leave laptops in parked cars, even in the boot.
  • Let a device cool to room temperature before charging after time outdoors.
  • Keep vents clear on desks, and do not stack closed laptops on chargers.
  • Expect smart charging to stop short of full on laptops that live on a dock; it protects the battery.

What to Do if a Unit Fails

  1. Frozen or blank: hold the power button for about 20 seconds until the logo appears.
  2. Not charging: try Surface Connect and USB-C separately, with a supply of at least the wattage Microsoft lists.
  3. Still faulty: install updates and run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit, then note the result.
  4. Before any repair: confirm the data is backed up or that the SSD will stay with you.

For several devices at once, see corporate Surface repair. If a board has failed and the data matters, see Surface Laptop data recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What processor does the Surface Laptop 6 for Business use?

Microsoft lists Intel Core Ultra 5 135H and Intel Core Ultra 7 165H, both with an Intel AI Boost NPU. Memory options run from 8GB LPDDR5 to 64GB LPDDR5x, with Intel Arc graphics on 16GB and larger configurations. Because it is Intel, it runs standard x64 Windows 11 Pro and existing business software and drivers.

Does the Surface Laptop 6 for Business have a smart card reader?

Microsoft lists an integrated smart card reader for select 15-inch configurations in Black, and names the US and Canada as the markets. A unit bought in the UAE is unlikely to have one. Check the exact configuration, or plan for a USB smart card reader if your company signs in with cards.

Can I upgrade the memory or storage in a Surface Laptop 6?

Storage, yes in principle, because Microsoft lists a removable Gen 4 SSD. Memory, no, because it is part of the motherboard module. The SSD being removable also means data can usually be kept or recovered if the board fails. Diagnosis is free and you get a written quote before any work.

Is the Surface Laptop 6 for Business still worth repairing?

Usually, when the fault is a part Microsoft lists as replaceable, such as the screen, battery, keyboard, SSD or Surface Connect port. It has more replaceable parts than Surface Laptop 5. You get a free diagnosis and a written quote first, so you can compare that with replacing the unit, and repairs carry a 90-day warranty.
