Every Copilot+ feature on Surface Laptop 7 explained: Recall, Cocreator, Live Captions, and what's worth using. Copilot+ PC features run on an NPU that Microsoft rates at more than 40 TOPS, found in Surface Laptop 7th Edition and the 13-inch model. We fit OEM Microsoft parts only, offer free Dubai pickup, and back every repair with a 90-day warranty. Rated 4.9★ from 223+ Google reviews.

Key Takeaways

  • Copilot+ PC features run on an NPU that Microsoft rates at more than 40 TOPS, found in Surface Laptop 7th Edition and the 13-inch model.
  • Recall needs encryption, Windows Hello biometric sign-in and enough free storage, and its snapshots are stored encrypted on the laptop.
  • Some Studio Effects, including portrait light and creative filters, are listed by Microsoft for Snapdragon Copilot+ PCs.
  • When a feature stops working, update Windows and the apps, check its requirements, and test the camera before suspecting the hardware.

Copilot+ PC features on Surface Laptop are Windows 11 tools that run on the laptop's neural processing unit (NPU) rather than in the cloud. They include Recall, Click to Do, live caption translation, Windows Studio Effects for the camera and Cocreator in Paint. Each has its own requirements, and when one stops working the cause is often a setting, an update or the camera, not the processor.

Which Surface Laptops Are Copilot+ PCs

Microsoft describes a Copilot+ PC as a Windows 11 device with an NPU that can run at more than 40 TOPS (trillion operations per second). Microsoft names these Surface Laptop models as Copilot+ PCs:

  • Surface Laptop (7th Edition) with Snapdragon X Plus or X Elite.
  • Surface Laptop for Business (7th Edition) with Intel Core Ultra processors (Series 2).
  • Surface Laptop 13-inch with Snapdragon.

Microsoft also notes that Copilot+ PC experiences vary by device and market, and some arrive through updates that roll out over time. If a feature below is missing, install all Windows updates first.

Recall

What it does: Recall saves snapshots of your screen so you can scroll back through a timeline, or search by describing what you remember, to find an app, document or page you saw earlier.

What it needs, according to Microsoft:

  • A Copilot+ PC with 16 GB of memory and 256 GB of storage.
  • At least 50 GB of free space to turn it on. Saving snapshots pauses when free space falls below 25 GB.
  • BitLocker or Device Encryption turned on.
  • Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security with at least one biometric sign-in, such as face recognition.

Privacy controls: Recall is in preview and snapshot saving is off by default. You turn it on under Settings, then Privacy and security, then Recall and snapshots. Microsoft says snapshots are encrypted and stored on your laptop, are not sent to Microsoft, and are protected by Windows Hello. You can pause it from the system tray, delete snapshots for an app or site, filter apps and websites, or reset Recall to delete everything.

Click to Do

What it does: Click to Do lets you act on whatever is on screen. For text you can copy, search the web, or open an email address or website. For images you can copy, save, share, search visually with Bing, blur the background or erase objects with Photos, or remove the background with Paint.

How to open it: Hold the Windows key and click, press Windows key and Q, or use a right swipe on a touch screen.

Good to know: Microsoft says the screen analysis happens on the device and starts when you open Click to Do. The smarter text actions, such as summarise or rewrite, need English as the default language, at least 10 selected words, and sign-in with a Microsoft account or work account.

Live Captions With Translation

What it does: Live captions show subtitles for any audio playing on the laptop. On a Copilot+ PC they can also translate audio from over 40 languages into English, in any app or video platform.

How to open it: Press the Windows key, Ctrl and L together.

Microsoft says the audio processing and caption generation happen on the device, so captions keep working without an internet connection.

Windows Studio Effects

What it does: Studio Effects improve the front camera and mics in any app that uses them:

  • Background effects: standard blur or a stronger portrait blur.
  • Automatic framing: keeps you centred.
  • Eye contact: a standard gaze correction, plus a teleprompter mode.
  • Voice focus: reduces background noise.
  • Portrait light and creative filters (Illustrated, Animated, Watercolor).

Microsoft lists portrait light, teleprompter eye contact and creative filters as Snapdragon Copilot+ PC features, so they may not appear on the Intel edition.

How to turn them on: open Quick Settings and select the Studio Effects tile, go to Settings, then Bluetooth and devices, then Cameras, or use the Studio Effects icon in the Camera app.

Cocreator in Paint

What it does: Cocreator turns a sketch and a short text prompt into artwork in a side pane, with a creativity slider and a choice of styles. Microsoft says it needs a Copilot+ PC and the latest version of Paint from the Microsoft Store, and that it works with English prompts as its main language.

Microsoft describes improved Windows search on Copilot+ PCs as helping you find files and settings faster, and notes that it works with specific text, image and document formats.

When a Feature Stops Working

Most problems are settings or updates. Work through these in order:

  1. Update everything. Open the Surface app, expand Help and support, and install what Windows Update offers. Update Paint and Photos from the Microsoft Store.
  2. Check the requirement. For Recall, confirm free space, encryption and Windows Hello face or fingerprint sign-in are all in place.
  3. Check the camera. Studio Effects and Windows Hello face sign-in depend on the front camera. If the Camera app shows a black image or an error, the camera itself may need attention. On Surface Laptop 7th Edition, Microsoft lists the camera as part of the display assembly.
  4. Restart. Hold the power button for about 20 seconds until the logo appears.

Before any repair or reset, save your BitLocker recovery key, because Recall needs encryption turned on and an encrypted drive cannot be read without it. Our Surface Laptop Snapdragon vs Intel guide explains other differences between the editions.

When to Bring It In

Bring it in if the camera, Windows Hello sign-in or mics have failed after updates and a restart, or if the laptop has a physical fault. We start with a free diagnosis and a written quote before any work, and every repair carries a 90-day warranty. See Surface Laptop camera repair and Surface Laptop repair in Dubai.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my Surface Laptop a Copilot+ PC?

Microsoft names Surface Laptop (7th Edition) with Snapdragon, Surface Laptop for Business (7th Edition) with Intel Core Ultra Series 2, and Surface Laptop 13-inch as Copilot+ PCs. They have an NPU that can run at more than 40 TOPS. Check the processor under Settings, System, About to confirm which model you have.

Why can't I turn on Recall on my Surface Laptop?

Recall needs at least 50 GB of free storage, BitLocker or Device Encryption, and Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security with a biometric sign-in such as face recognition. Check each of these, install all Windows updates, and then turn it on under Settings, Privacy and security, Recall and snapshots. Snapshot saving is off by default.

Do Copilot+ features send my data to the cloud?

Microsoft says Recall snapshots are encrypted and stored on your laptop and are not sent to Microsoft. Click to Do analyses the screen on the device, and live captions process audio on the device. Some actions, such as searching the web or a visual search with Bing, do go online when you choose them.

Why are some Studio Effects missing on my Surface Laptop?

Microsoft lists portrait light, teleprompter eye contact and creative filters as features of Snapdragon Copilot+ PCs, so they may not appear on the Intel edition. If all effects are missing, install updates and check the camera in the Camera app. A camera that shows nothing may need a repair.
