What's different about repairing Surface Pro X: ARM chip considerations, parts availability, and Dubai pricing. Surface Pro X uses an Arm processor, so a single app that will not run is usually a compatibility issue rather than a fault. Key Takeaways

  • Surface Pro X uses an Arm processor, so a single app that will not run is usually a compatibility issue rather than a fault.
  • Microsoft lists the display, kickstand, removable SSD and SSD door as Surface Pro X replacement parts.
  • A Pro X still on Windows 10 should move to Windows 11, which emulates both x86 (32-bit) and x64 (64-bit) apps.
  • Have your BitLocker recovery key ready before any drive or display repair on a Surface Pro X.

Surface Pro X runs Windows on an Arm processor, Microsoft's SQ1 or SQ2, so some problems that look like faults are really app compatibility issues, and they are fixed in software. Hardware faults such as a cracked screen, a broken kickstand or a failed drive are repaired with parts Microsoft lists for the Pro X. The first job is telling the two apart, and this guide shows how.

What Makes Surface Pro X Different

Compared with other Surface Pro models, the Pro X has a few features that shape both troubleshooting and repair:

  • An Arm processor. Microsoft SQ1 or SQ2, with 8GB or 16GB of memory.
  • Fanless cooling. Microsoft describes carbon composite fanless cooling, so there is no fan to clean or replace, and no fan noise.
  • A removable SSD of 128GB, 256GB or 512GB, behind a small door that also holds the SIM on LTE models.
  • LTE models with a nano SIM and eSIM support.
  • Different Windows at launch. The Wi-Fi model came with Windows 11 Home on ARM. The LTE model came with Windows 10 Home on ARM and a free upgrade to Windows 11.

Is It an App Problem or a Hardware Problem?

Windows on Arm runs apps in two ways. Native Arm64 apps run directly; Microsoft lists Microsoft 365 apps, Chrome, Zoom and WhatsApp among them. Apps built for Intel and AMD processors run through Microsoft's emulation layer, Prism, which does not support drivers. Most apps work, but Microsoft lists clear limits:

  • Drivers must be built for Arm. An app that installs its own non-Arm driver might not work.
  • Printers and scanners work when Windows has a built-in driver or the maker provides an Arm64 one.
  • Some games fail, especially those using anti-cheat drivers that have not been updated for Arm, or newer OpenGL versions.
  • Some antivirus, CAD software and customisation tools may not install or may be limited.
  • Windows Fax and Scan is not available on Arm devices.
  • On Windows 10, Microsoft's Pro X page says 64-bit apps that have not been ported to Arm will not install.

If one program fails while the rest of the device is fine, it is usually compatibility, not hardware.

Fixing App Compatibility

  1. Update Windows. Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. An LTE Pro X still on Windows 10 should be upgraded to Windows 11, which emulates both x86 (32-bit) and x64 (64-bit) apps.
  2. Look for an Arm64 version of the app or driver on the developer's site or in the Microsoft Store. Native versions run better and avoid emulation limits.
  3. Add printers through Windows Settings if the maker has no Arm64 driver, so Windows can use its built-in one.
  4. Try the emulation settings. Right-click the app's program file, open Properties, then the Compatibility tab, which has a Windows on Arm section. Microsoft notes these settings can improve compatibility, usually at the cost of performance, and can also stop an app launching, so change one at a time.
  5. Use a web version of the service if the desktop app has no Arm support.

Hardware Faults on Surface Pro X

When the problem affects the whole device, not one app, it is likely hardware:

  • Will not turn on. Hold the power button for about 20 seconds to force a restart, then try a known-good charger on Surface Connect or USB-C. The Surface Pro not turning on guide covers the full set of checks.
  • Cracked screen, dead touch or lines.
  • Kickstand loose or broken.
  • Drive errors, a missing boot device or repeated disk failures.
  • No mobile data on an LTE model after the SIM and carrier settings are confirmed.
  • Very hot to the touch. With no fan, heat spreads through the body. If it becomes hot during light use, stop using it and have it checked.

What Microsoft Lists for Pro X Repair

Microsoft's self-repair page lists four Surface Pro X parts: the kickstand, the removable SSD, the SSD door and the display. Its service guide shows how each is handled:

  • Display. Before the old screen comes off, the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit puts the device into a display replacement mode. The screen is bonded with adhesive, cut free along set depths to protect the cables, and a new screen is pressed into place under weights before the toolkit calibrates touch.
  • Removable SSD. It sits behind the SIM door and is held by one Torx Plus screw. Microsoft says to replace it with a Microsoft drive of the same capacity, then re-image it and run the diagnostic toolkit.
  • Kickstand. It is held by two hinge screws that are refitted with thread locker, then checked for alignment.

The battery is not on Microsoft's list for the Pro X, and in Microsoft's own display procedure a device with battery issues goes to whole unit replacement. Battery and board faults on a Pro X are therefore assessed case by case, with a written quote before any work.

Before You Hand It Over

  • Find your BitLocker recovery key. On a personal device it is saved to your Microsoft account. Microsoft's own drive procedure asks for it.
  • Note your Windows password.
  • Remove the SIM if you want to keep it, or tell us it is there.
  • Back up anything not in OneDrive, if the device still starts.

Get It Checked

You get a written quote before any work and a 90-day warranty on the repair. Screens are usually done the same day; board-level work usually takes 48 to 72 hours. Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't some apps install on my Surface Pro X?

Surface Pro X uses an Arm processor. Most Intel apps run through Microsoft's emulation, but apps that need non-Arm drivers, some games with anti-cheat, some antivirus and some CAD software may not. On Windows 10, unported 64-bit apps will not install at all. Update to Windows 11 and look for an Arm64 version of the app first.

Can a Surface Pro X screen be replaced?

Yes. Microsoft lists the display as a Surface Pro X replacement part. Its procedure puts the device into a display replacement mode with the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit, cuts the bonded screen free, fits the new one under weights and then calibrates touch. It needs the right tools, so it is a workshop job rather than a home repair.

Can the Surface Pro X battery be replaced?

Microsoft does not list the battery as a Surface Pro X replacement part, and its own display procedure sends a device with battery issues to whole unit replacement. That means a battery or power fault needs a proper diagnosis first. You get a written quote before any work, so you can decide whether the repair makes sense for your device.

Does Surface Pro X have a fan that can be cleaned?

No. Microsoft describes Surface Pro X as having carbon composite fanless cooling, so there is no fan to clean and no fan noise. If it gets very hot during light use, close heavy apps, keep it out of the sun and away from soft surfaces, and if the heat continues, stop using it and have it checked.
