For most students in the UAE, the choice is between the Surface Laptop 13-inch, which is the lightest and charges over USB-C, and the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop, which has a sharper 120Hz screen, more memory options and Surface Connect. The 15-inch suits students who want a bigger screen and a microSD card reader and do not mind the extra weight. Before choosing, check that your course software runs on Snapdragon, because consumer Surface Laptops use Arm-based Windows. This guide compares the models from Microsoft's spec pages and leaves out prices, which change by retailer and configuration.

Microsoft now lists Surface Laptop (8th Edition) in 13.8-inch and 15-inch sizes and a Surface Laptop 13-inch (2nd Edition), both with Snapdragon X2 processors. Shops in the UAE may still sell the earlier editions described below, so check the exact model on the box or the retailer's listing.

The Three Sizes Compared

Check Your Course Software First

Consumer Surface Laptops use Snapdragon processors and Arm-based Windows 11. Microsoft says apps not built for Arm run through emulation, which covers a lot of everyday software. The exceptions are the ones that catch students out:

• Drivers must be designed for Arm-based Windows, which matters for lab equipment, some printers and specialist hardware. Microsoft says most printers are supported, including those that use the Mopria standard.
• Exam and proctoring software, VPN clients and some antivirus may need an Arm version. Microsoft notes that some third-party antivirus will not install.
• Games with anti-cheat drivers may not run.

Consumer models come with Windows 11 Home. Microsoft says Home can be upgraded to Windows 11 Pro for an additional cost if your course needs Pro features.

• Do not leave the laptop in a car between lectures, even in the boot.
• Let it cool down indoors before charging after walking across campus in summer.
• Use a padded sleeve, and keep water bottles in a separate pocket of your bag.

If Something Breaks During the Semester

Microsoft lists replacement parts for all three models, including the display assembly, keyboard, battery and removable storage, and sells parts for out-of-warranty repair. Removable storage helps when a board fails, because the drive can usually be read and your files recovered.
