Every common Surface Book 2 issue (battery drain, GPU failure, hinge wear) and how we fix each in Dubai. Both Surface Book 2 batteries must be above 10 percent before the screen will detach, and a brief red Detach light means one is too low. Every screen, battery, and board is OEM Microsoft; pickup is free across Dubai; warranty is 90 days. Rated 4.9★ from 223+ Google reviews.

Key Takeaways

  • Both Surface Book 2 batteries must be above 10 percent before the screen will detach, and a brief red Detach light means one is too low.
  • A flashing green Detach light means the screen is not seated, so press it down firmly and clean the hinge connectors.
  • Surface Book 2 uses the 20-second power-button restart, not the two-button method of the original Surface Book.
  • A screen that will not release on a green light, a bulging half or faults that also appear in UEFI need a repair.

Surface Book 2 is two devices joined by a hinge: a screen that detaches to work as a tablet, and a keyboard base. Each half has its own battery, and the two connect through connectors on the hinge. Many of its common faults come from that design, such as detach errors and one battery not charging, while others, like screen flicker, are shared with every Surface. This guide follows Microsoft's own steps for each, then lists the signs of a hardware fault.

Start Here: Updates and the Right Restart

  • Install updates. Open the Surface app, expand Help & support and install anything pending, then run Windows Update. Microsoft's first step for detach and keyboard problems is to make sure the drivers and firmware are current.
  • Force restart the right way. Surface Book 2 uses the 20-second method: press and hold the power button until the logo appears, then release. The two-button method belongs to the original Surface Book, not the Book 2.
  • Check your Windows version. Microsoft lists the Book 2 models with the Intel Core i5-8350U or i7-8650U as eligible for Windows 11. The 13.5-inch model with the i5-7300U is not, and Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025.

Problem 1: The Screen Will Not Detach

Press the Detach key on the keyboard and watch its light:

Detach key lightWhat it meansWhat to do
Solid greenReady to detachLift the screen off
Flashing greenThe screen is not seated properlyPress the screen down onto the base with moderate pressure
Brief red flashOne of the batteries is too lowCharge until the light turns green

Both batteries must be charged above 10 percent before the screen will release. If the light is green but nothing happens:

  • Press Detach briefly and wait about ten seconds before you pull.
  • Restart from Start > Power > Restart, then try again.
  • Use the Detach icon on the taskbar instead of the key.
  • If the Detach icon has disappeared, open Task Manager, go to Startup and make sure Surface DTX is Enabled, then restart.
  • If one side releases and the other does not, push both halves back together and try again.
  • Never press Detach while the Surface is shutting down.

Clean the connectors. Disconnect the charger and any USB devices, detach the screen, and clean the three connectors on the hinge with a cotton swab lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol, using a fresh part of the swab for each face. Let them dry and check for fibres before reattaching. More detail is in our Surface Book not detaching guide and the detach mechanism explainer.

Problem 2: A Battery Not Charging, or Short Battery Life

  • Use the right port. Surface Book 2 charges through Surface Connect or USB-C. When the screen is detached it charges through the power port in the centre of its bottom edge, and the keyboard base can charge on its own while detached.
  • Check the charger light. If the light on the Surface Connect plug blinks or stays off, try another socket and another charger before blaming the Surface.
  • Look for a heart icon. A heart over the battery icon means smart charging is holding the battery at 80 percent to protect it. In the Surface app, go to Battery & charging and pause smart charging for a full charge, if your model offers that option. This is normal behaviour, not a fault.
  • Keep both halves above 10 percent if you detach often, or the screen will not release.

If one battery stays at zero after several hours on a known-good charger, the Surface shuts down while reporting plenty of charge, or either half starts to bulge, the battery or charging circuit needs attention. Our guide to a Surface Book base battery not charging covers the base in more detail.

Problem 3: Screen Flicker or a Black Screen

  • Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B to restart the graphics driver.
  • Turn off Change brightness based on content under Settings > System > Display > Brightness.
  • Every Book 2 has an Intel processor, so the Intel Graphics Command Center settings apply: under System > Power, set Display Power Savings to Off, then Panel Self Refresh if needed.
  • Reinstall the display drivers in Device Manager under Monitors and Display adapters. On configurations with NVIDIA graphics you will see both an Intel and an NVIDIA adapter; Microsoft's steps cover both.
  • Run the UEFI test. Shut down, wait 10 seconds, hold volume up, press and release power, and release volume up when UEFI appears. You can also reach it from Settings > System > Recovery > Advanced startup. Flicker in UEFI points to hardware; a steady screen points to software.

The Surface screen flickering guide has the full sequence.

Problem 4: Keyboard or Touchpad Not Responding

  • In View or Draw mode, with the screen attached facing outwards, the keyboard and touchpad are switched off by design. Reattach the screen facing the keyboard.
  • A flashing green Detach light means the halves are not making full contact. Seat the screen firmly and clean the connectors as above.
  • Press Caps and Fn a few times. If their lights do not come on, Microsoft treats that as a likely hardware fault.
  • Test in UEFI. If the keyboard and touchpad work there but not in Windows, the cause is software and Reset this PC with Keep my files is the next step.

Problem 5: A Loose or Worn Hinge

The hinge carries the connectors between the two halves. A screen that wobbles, will not sit level on the base, or shows a flashing green Detach light even after cleaning and reseating can point to wear in the hinge or its connectors. Do not force the screen off, because pulling against a locked hinge can damage the connectors.

When It Needs a Repair

Book a check if:

  • The screen will not release with a green Detach light, even after a restart and cleaning.
  • One battery will not charge, or either half is bulging.
  • The screen flickers or stays black in UEFI.
  • The keyboard and touchpad fail in UEFI, or the Caps and Fn lights stay off.
  • The hinge is loose, cracked or no longer holds the screen.
  • It stopped after a drop or a spill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't my Surface Book 2 screen detach?

Often a battery is too low or the screen is not seated. Both batteries must be above 10 percent, and a brief red light on the Detach key means one is not. A flashing green light means the halves are not fully connected. Charge it, press the screen down firmly, restart, then try the Detach icon on the taskbar.

Does Surface Book 2 have two batteries?

Yes. The screen and the keyboard base each have a battery, and both must be above 10 percent before the screen will detach. The base can charge while detached, and the screen charges through the power port in the centre of its bottom edge. The whole device charges through Surface Connect or USB-C.

How do I force restart a Surface Book 2?

Press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds, until the logo appears, then release. Microsoft lists Surface Book 2 and later with the newer models that use this method. The two-button method, holding volume up and power together, applies to the original Surface Book and older Surface Pro models.

When should a Surface Book 2 be repaired?

Book a check when the screen will not release on a green Detach light, a battery will not charge, either half bulges, the hinge is loose, or faults appear in UEFI. Diagnosis is free and you get a written quote before any work, with free pickup anywhere in Dubai and a 90-day warranty on the repair.
