Surface Book has TWO batteries: base and clipboard. This guide covers replacement for both, plus Dubai pricing. Every Surface Book has a battery in the detachable screen and another in the keyboard base, and either can fail on its own. We use only OEM Microsoft components, collect free anywhere in Dubai, and warrant every job for 90 days. Rated 4.9★ from 223+ Google reviews.

Key Takeaways

  • Every Surface Book has a battery in the detachable screen and another in the keyboard base, and either can fail on its own.
  • Both batteries need enough charge before the screen will detach, so one dead battery can also block detaching.
  • Smart charging and Battery Limit can stop charging early on purpose, so check those settings before blaming the battery.
  • Stop using and do not charge a Surface Book whose battery has visibly swollen, and get it checked.

Every Surface Book has two batteries: one in the detachable screen, which Microsoft names the clipboard, and one in the keyboard base. Either can wear out or stop charging on its own, so the first job is finding out which one is at fault. Rule out charging and settings problems, check the battery health with Microsoft's tool, and replace a battery when it is swollen, not detected or no longer holds a useful charge.

How the Two Batteries Work

  • Screen battery. Powers the screen when it is detached. On its own, the screen charges through the power port in the centre of its bottom edge, where it joins the keyboard.
  • Base battery. Sits in the keyboard base and can be charged while the base is detached.
  • Together. Microsoft says both batteries must be charged above a minimum level before the screen will detach. If either is too low, the Detach key flashes red briefly instead of turning green.
  • Charging. Surface Book 2 charges through USB-C or Surface Connect. Surface Book 3 has a Surface Connect port on the base and another on the tablet.

Signs a Battery Needs Replacing

  • The screen or base will not charge past zero on a known-good charger.
  • Windows shows a red X on the battery icon, meaning the battery is not detected.
  • The Surface Book shuts down when you unplug it, even though it shows charge.
  • Battery life has dropped a long way and the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit reports heavy wear.
  • The screen will not detach because one battery never charges enough.
  • The screen lifts, the base bulges, or the case no longer sits flat.

A swollen battery is the one sign to act on straight away. Microsoft recommends you stop using a Surface whose battery has visibly expanded beyond the enclosure, and handle it carefully without pressing on or puncturing it. Do not charge it.

Charging Checks to Try First

  1. Try another socket and cable. Make sure every connection is secure and nothing is plugged into the charger's own USB port. Disconnect accessories that draw a lot of power.
  2. Check the charger light. The light on the Surface Connect plug should be on whenever it is connected. If it stays off, the power supply may be faulty.
  3. Clean the pins. Rub the Surface Connect pins with a pencil eraser, wipe the charger's plug with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol, let them dry, and reconnect.
  4. Read the battery icon. A red X means the battery is not detected. An exclamation mark means the Surface is getting power, but not enough to charge, so use the power supply designed for it.
  5. Reinstall the battery driver. With the Surface Book plugged in, open Device Manager, expand Batteries, uninstall Surface Battery or Microsoft Surface ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, select Action > Scan for hardware changes, then restart.
  6. Charge each half separately. Detach and charge the screen through its own port, and charge the base on its own, to see which battery responds.

Settings That Look Like a Fault

Smart charging. Microsoft lists Surface Book, Book 2 and Book 3 as supporting smart charging but not showing the heart icon, so a battery that stops short of full may simply be protecting itself. In the Surface app, go to Battery & charging and choose to charge to full.

Battery Limit. This UEFI setting stops charging at half of the battery's capacity, which suits a Surface Book that stays plugged in. Microsoft says it is built into Surface Book 3; on Surface Book 2 a firmware update applies it to the base battery as well as the clipboard; on the original Surface Book it applies to the clipboard battery. To change it, open UEFI and go to Boot configuration > Advanced Options.

Check the Battery Health

Install the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit from the Microsoft Store. Its battery section shows the designed capacity, the current capacity and the wear level. Microsoft presents replacement for wear as optional, for when you want more battery life, so weigh the result against how you use the Surface Book.

How Microsoft Handles Surface Book Batteries

  • Microsoft's self-repair parts page does not cover Surface Book, so there is no Microsoft battery kit for doing it yourself.
  • Microsoft lists Surface Book 3 for its paid battery replacement service, but says that service is not available in the Middle East and Africa region.
  • Microsoft's repair safety guidance warns against heating, puncturing or bending a battery, and lists swelling, leaks, corrosion and a smell like nail polish remover as signs a battery is damaged.

That is why a Surface Book battery replacement in Dubai is a workshop job: the case has to be opened safely, the right battery identified, and both halves tested together afterwards.

Making a Battery Last

  • Microsoft rates Surface devices for use and charging between 0°C and 35°C. Keep it out of hot cars and direct sun, where heat ages the battery.
  • Avoid leaving it on the charger at full charge for long periods, or turn on Battery Limit if it never leaves the desk.
  • Keep firmware updated through Windows Update and the Surface app.
  • See Surface Book 2 common problems and the detach mechanism explainer for how battery level affects detaching.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Surface Book have two batteries?

Yes. One battery is in the detachable screen, which Microsoft names the clipboard, and one is in the keyboard base. The base can charge while detached, and the screen charges through the port in the centre of its bottom edge. Both need enough charge before the screen will detach.

How do I know which Surface Book battery is failing?

Detach the screen and charge each half separately to see which one responds. The Surface Diagnostic Toolkit from the Microsoft Store shows designed capacity, current capacity and wear level. A red X on the battery icon means a battery is not detected. A diagnosis confirms which battery needs replacing before any work starts.

Why does my Surface Book stop charging before full?

Two Microsoft features can do this on purpose. Smart charging holds the battery below full when it stays plugged in or gets warm, and Surface Book models do not show the heart icon for it. Battery Limit in UEFI stops charging at half capacity. Check both before assuming the battery has failed.

Can I replace a Surface Book battery myself?

It is not recommended. Microsoft's self-repair parts page does not cover Surface Book, and its repair safety guidance warns against heating, bending or puncturing a battery. A workshop opens the case safely, fits the right battery and tests both halves together. You get a written quote first and a 90-day warranty on the repair.
