Key Takeaways
- The charging case light tells you whether the case needs charging, is charging, is full or has a badly seated earbud.
- Microsoft's first fix for pairing is to put the earbuds in the case for at least 15 seconds and take them out again.
- A factory reset is a 20-second hold of the Pair button, while a firmware reset is a shorter hold while connecting USB-C.
- A case that will not charge or an earbud that stays silent after every Microsoft step points to a hardware repair.
Most Surface Earbuds faults, such as earbuds that will not pair, a case that will not charge, a dead touch surface or a case light that behaves oddly, are fixed with Microsoft's own steps: reseat the earbuds, charge the case, update the firmware and use the right reset. If the case still will not charge or an earbud stays silent after all of that, Microsoft's pages point to a hardware problem. This guide follows that order.
Know Your Case Light
The light on the charging case tells you most of what is happening. Microsoft documents these states:
| Case light | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Solid red | The case needs charging |
| Fading white, on and off | The case is charging |
| Solid white | The case is fully charged |
| Flashing red after you put the earbuds in | The earbuds are not seated correctly |
| Alternating white and red | A factory reset is in progress |
| Continuous white flashing | The earbuds are in pairing mode |
Quick Checks First
- Reseat the earbuds. Take both out and put them back, left earbud in the left side and right in the right, until the case light stops flashing red.
- Charge the case. Plug the included USB cable into a Windows PC or a USB power adapter, and the other end into the USB-C port on the back of the case. Microsoft says the case takes about an hour to charge, and the earbuds charge while they sit inside it.
- Reconnect. Microsoft's first fix for a connection problem is to put the earbuds back in the case for at least 15 seconds, then take them out again. Check they are not already connected to another device nearby.
- Check the output device. On Windows, select the sound icon on the taskbar and make sure Surface Earbuds is selected.
- Check the battery levels. Open the Surface app and select Surface Earbuds. Once they connect, the app shows the battery level, so you can see whether one earbud is simply flat.
The earbuds switch off by themselves when the case lid is closed, and after 10 minutes without moving, so a silent earbud may simply be asleep.
Update the Firmware
Microsoft releases fixes through the Surface app:
- Take the earbuds out of the case so they connect.
- In the Surface app on Windows, select Surface Earbuds, then Device information.
- Under Firmware update, select Update using Bluetooth if an update is shown.
Microsoft says this takes up to 15 minutes on Windows and about an hour on iOS, and you cannot listen during the update. The charging case has its own firmware: on Windows, connect the case to the PC with the USB cable and select Update case in Device information when it appears. Firmware updates cannot be rolled back.
Microsoft's accessory lifecycle page lists Surface Earbuds as released on May 12, 2020, with an end-of-servicing date of June 30, 2026. After that date no new firmware is published, so the latest firmware in the app is the last one.
Factory Reset or Firmware Reset
Microsoft separates the two resets by symptom, and both start at the Pair button on the bottom of the case.
Factory reset, when the earbuds will not connect after a few tries:
- Hold the Pair button for 20 seconds. The light alternates white and red, then flashes white when the earbuds are in pairing mode.
- Or use Reset now under Factory reset in the Surface app.
This clears pairing information, equalizer settings and language settings, so you set them up again afterwards.
Firmware reset, when the touch surface on either earbud stops responding, the digital assistant does not start on touch and hold, the case does not charge over USB, or the case light is not working properly:
- Plug the USB cable into a Windows PC or a USB power adapter.
- Press and hold the Pair button on the bottom of the case for less than 20 seconds.
- While still holding it, connect the USB-C end to the case.
- Release the Pair button.
Hold for 20 seconds or longer and you get a factory reset instead. The firmware reset covers both the earbuds and the case.
Common Faults and What They Point To
| What you notice | First thing to try | If it continues |
|---|---|---|
| Earbuds will not pair | Case for 15 seconds, factory reset | Bluetooth or earbud fault |
| One earbud silent | Reseat, charge, re-pair | Earbud battery or speaker |
| Case will not charge | Other cable and adapter, firmware reset | Case port or case battery |
| Case light dead | Charge, then firmware reset | Case board or battery |
| Touch surface dead | Firmware reset | Touch sensor fault |
| Others cannot hear you | Input device, app settings | Microphone fault |
Surface Earbuds have two microphones in each earbud and an IPX4 rating, according to Microsoft. They do not have active noise cancellation, so there is no ANC setting to troubleshoot. For one earbud that will not play, read the one side not working guide.
When It Needs a Repair
Microsoft lists Surface Earbuds as eligible for service through its Device Service and Repair site, where the options are a repair of the unit or a refurbished replacement. Microsoft's store page now shows Surface Earbuds for Business as not available. An independent workshop can diagnose whether the fault is in an earbud, the charging contacts, the case port or the case battery before you decide anything.
Book a check if:
- The case will not charge with a known good cable and adapter, even after a firmware reset.
- One earbud stays silent or will not charge after reseating, resets and an update.
- The case light stays off after a charge and a firmware reset.
- An earbud or the case was crushed, dropped hard or soaked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my Surface Earbuds case flashing red?
Microsoft says a flashing red light after you put the earbuds in means they are not seated correctly. Take them out and put them back, left in the left side and right in the right, until the light stops flashing. A solid red light is different: it means the case itself needs charging over USB-C.
How do I reset Surface Earbuds?
For pairing problems, hold the Pair button on the bottom of the case for 20 seconds until the light alternates white and red. For dead touch controls or a case that will not charge, do a firmware reset: hold Pair for less than 20 seconds while you connect the USB-C cable, then release it.
Do Surface Earbuds still get firmware updates?
Microsoft's accessory lifecycle page lists June 30, 2026 as the end-of-servicing date for Surface Earbuds, after which no new firmware is published. Install whatever update the Surface app offers under Device information, including the separate charging case update on Windows. Microsoft notes firmware updates cannot be rolled back once installed.
Can Surface Earbuds be repaired in Dubai?
Yes. An independent workshop can test each earbud, the charging contacts, the case port and the case battery to find the fault before any work.
