Key Takeaways
- Surface Hub 3 50 inch keeps the 2S screen, size and weight but adds more memory and storage, a wider camera and portrait rotation.
- Surface Hub 3 runs Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows, while Surface Hub 2S shipped with Windows 10 Team, which ended on October 14, 2025.
- The Surface Hub 3 Compute Cartridge turns a 2S into a Hub 3, while a software migration keeps the older hardware limits.
- Microsoft services Surface Hub 2S firmware until January 11, 2027 and Surface Hub 3 until December 30, 2030.
Surface Hub 3 keeps the same 50 inch screen size, resolution and body as Surface Hub 2S, but adds a newer compute cartridge with four times the memory and storage, the wider Surface Hub Smart Camera, rotation to portrait on the 50 inch, and Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows in place of Windows 10 Team. The bigger difference now is support: Windows 10 Team ended on October 14, 2025, so a 2S has to be upgraded or migrated to stay current.

Microsoft also states that Surface Hub 3 delivers a large increase in CPU and GPU performance over Surface Hub 2S. On the 50 inch Hub 3, Smart AV adjusts the audio for portrait or landscape.
The 85 inch models
Surface Hub 3 85 inch has a 3840 x 2160 screen in 16:9, 20 simultaneous touch points, two pens in the box and weighs 84 kg. Microsoft says the 85 inch cannot rotate to portrait. Both generations of 85 inch Hub use a 600 x 600 mm VESA pattern, and Microsoft lists the Smart Camera in the box with the Surface Hub 2S 85 inch as well as both Surface Hub 3 sizes.
Software: Windows 10 Team vs Teams Rooms on Windows
Microsoft publishes a platform differences table. The main points:
| Area | Windows 10 Team (Hub 2S) | Teams Rooms on Windows (Hub 3) |
|---|---|---|
| Management | Inconsistent with other Teams Rooms | Teams Admin Center and Pro Management Portal |
| Deployment | Standard processes | Windows Autopilot |
| Peripherals | A short list of specific items | Teams Rooms peripherals |
| Meeting layouts | No Front Row, chat as bubbles | Front Row and persistent chat |
| Digital signage | Not supported | Supported |
| Centre-of-table consoles | Not available | Supported since September 29, 2025 |
| Store and Office apps | Supported | Edge for touch boards, off by default |
| DisplayPort video out | Supported | Needs Windows 11 Pro or Enterprise |
| HDMI input | Into the Connect app | Bypass mode as a display |
Windows 10 Team let users sign in to the Hub itself for personal files and apps. Teams Rooms on Windows instead relies on Teams Cast, desktop sharing, Miracast (added on May 27, 2026) and the Edge browser, which admins switch on.
Support Dates
- Windows 10 Team: end of support October 14, 2025, with no extended support option. Microsoft states that Hubs still on it no longer receive security updates.
- Surface Hub 2S firmware and drivers: serviced until January 11, 2027.
- Surface Hub 3 firmware and drivers: serviced until December 30, 2030.
Options for an Existing Surface Hub 2S
- Surface Hub 3 Compute Cartridge. It has the same shape and size as the 2S cartridge, with tactile bumps to tell them apart. Microsoft says it turns a 2S into a Surface Hub 3, with the same firmware, driver and feature updates. You remove a retaining bolt with a Phillips screwdriver, swap the cartridge and press power. The new cartridge has its own one-year limited warranty and does not extend the 2S warranty. If you send the old cartridge for recycling, Microsoft says to remove the drive and delete corporate data first.
- Software migration to Teams Rooms on Windows. The Migration Launcher app route closed on December 14, 2025, and the USB method remains. A migrated 2S runs the same platform as Hub 3, but Microsoft lists no Smart Rotation, portrait mode, Intelligent Audio or faster performance, and notes higher energy use after migration.
- A new Surface Hub 3. Microsoft points customers to its Surface resellers.
Repair Considerations
The two generations share the same 50 inch body and the cartridge design, but the cartridges and recovery images differ. Microsoft's recovery article says a Hub 3, or a 2S with a Hub 3 Compute Cartridge, must use the Windows 11 IoT Enterprise with Teams Rooms on Windows image, and that other images may harm the device. Tell any repairer which cartridge your Hub has before work starts.
On Surface Hub 3, Microsoft lists the compute cartridge with removable SSD, the Smart Camera and the pens as user-replaceable. Display, touch and power faults need a workshop. Frequently Asked Questions
Is Surface Hub 3 a different screen from Surface Hub 2S?
On the 50 inch models the screen specs match: 3840 x 2560 resolution, 3:2 aspect ratio and a PixelSense display, in the same 28 kg body. The differences are inside the compute cartridge, the Smart Camera, rotation to portrait and the Teams Rooms on Windows software, plus Microsoft's longer firmware servicing date.
Can I upgrade my Surface Hub 2S to a Surface Hub 3?
Yes. Microsoft says the Surface Hub 3 Compute Cartridge turns a Surface Hub 2S into a Surface Hub 3. It is the same shape as the old cartridge, fits with a Phillips screwdriver and gets the same updates as Hub 3. It carries its own one-year limited warranty and does not extend the 2S warranty.
What does a software-migrated Surface Hub 2S miss out on?
A 2S migrated to Teams Rooms on Windows runs the same platform as Surface Hub 3, but Microsoft lists no Smart Rotation, portrait mode, Intelligent Audio or faster performance, because those need Hub 3 hardware. Microsoft also notes higher energy use after migration. The Migration Launcher app closed on December 14, 2025, leaving the USB method.
Can the Surface Hub 3 85 inch rotate to portrait?
No. Microsoft says rotation to portrait is supported on 50 inch Hub 3 hardware, meaning a new Surface Hub 3 50 inch or a 50 inch Surface Hub 2S fitted with the Surface Hub 3 Compute Cartridge. The 85 inch stays in landscape because of its form factor and expected use cases, according to Microsoft's FAQ.
