Key Takeaways
- Identify whether you have a Surface Hub v1, 2S or 3 first, because support status and recovery steps differ by model.
- Microsoft's power check for Hub 2S and Hub 3 ends with a 20 second power button reset and reseating the compute cartridge.
- USB recovery reinstalls Surface Hub 2S and Surface Hub 3 to factory settings but erases accounts, data and configuration.
- Check Microsoft warranty status by serial number before anyone opens the Hub, since damage during a repair is not covered.
Most Surface Hub faults fall into three groups: the Hub will not power on, the software will not start, or a part such as the screen, touch layer, camera or pen has failed. Microsoft documents a short power check and a full USB recovery for Surface Hub 2S and Surface Hub 3, and you should run those first. If the Hub still fails, or the glass is cracked, the fault is hardware and needs a diagnosis by someone who works on Surface Hub.
Step 1: Identify Your Surface Hub
The model decides which steps apply and what support Microsoft still offers. Microsoft's driver and firmware lifecycle page lists these generations:
| Model | Sizes | Released | Firmware and driver servicing ends |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surface Hub (v1) | 55 and 84 inch | June 1, 2015 | Ended November 30, 2022 |
| Surface Hub 2S | 50 and 85 inch | April 17, 2019 | January 11, 2027 |
| Surface Hub 3 | 50 and 85 inch | December 5, 2023 | December 30, 2030 |
The serial number on Surface Hub 2S and Surface Hub 3 is printed on the display near the power cord. Keep it ready, because Microsoft's warranty check and any repair quote start with it.
Two dates matter for older units. Windows 10 Team, the system that ran on v1 and the original 2S, reached end of support on October 14, 2025. Microsoft states that Surface Hub v1 devices are no longer supported and recommends a hardware refresh, while a v1 can still be used as a display for an external PC in Replacement PC Mode. A Surface Hub 2S needs to run a Windows 11 based platform, such as Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows, to keep receiving updates. For the full comparison, see Surface Hub 3 vs Surface Hub 2S.
Step 2: Quick Checks You Can Do Safely
These come from Microsoft's power troubleshooting article for Surface Hub 2S and Surface Hub 3:
- Remove every connection except Ethernet and power.
- Plug the Hub straight into a dedicated wall outlet, not a shared power strip.
- If an APC Charge Mobile Battery is attached, disconnect it and try again.
- Try a different power cord and a different outlet.
- Hold the power button for at least 20 seconds to perform a hardware reset.
- If it still will not start, reseat the compute cartridge, following Microsoft's instructions for your model.
If the screen lights but shows nothing useful, read the Surface Hub display not working guide. If touch or the pen has stopped, read the Surface Hub touchscreen fix guide.
Step 3: Microsoft's Own Recovery Tools
When the Hub powers on but the software is broken, stuck or locked, Microsoft provides two routes:
- USB recovery (Surface Hub 2S and Surface Hub 3). You download the recovery image from Microsoft's Surface Recovery website on another PC, copy it to a USB 3.0 drive formatted as FAT32, then hold Volume down and press Power on the Hub. This reinstalls the device to factory settings even if the BitLocker key or admin password is lost. Surface Hub 3, and any 2S fitted with the Surface Hub 3 Compute Cartridge, must use the Windows 11 IoT Enterprise with Microsoft Teams Rooms on Windows image. Microsoft warns that other images may harm the device and void the warranty.
- Settings reset (Surface Hub 2S on Windows 10 Team). An admin can reset from Settings, Update and security, Recovery. Have the BitLocker key ready: skipping that prompt makes the reset fail.
Both routes erase accounts, data and configuration, so plan to rerun first time setup and re-enrol the Hub in Intune afterwards. Microsoft notes that if a recovery drive boots on another Hub but not on yours, that points to a hardware failure.
Step 4: Warranty and Data
Surface Hub 3 and Surface Hub 2S come with a one-year limited hardware warranty from Microsoft. If your unit is still covered, check its status by serial number and open a support request with Microsoft or your reseller before anyone opens it. Microsoft's tech specs state that damage caused during a repair is not covered by its hardware warranty, and its installation guide adds that a cracked screen caused by misuse is not covered either.
Before any repair or cartridge swap, think about the data on the Hub. Microsoft's advice when recycling an old compute cartridge is to remove the drive and delete corporate data first. The same thinking applies when a Hub leaves your building: sign out shared accounts, keep the BitLocker key safe, and ask that the drive stays with you if the fault allows it.
Step 5: Handle It Safely
A Surface Hub is large and heavy. Microsoft lists the Surface Hub 3 85 inch at 84 kg and the 50 inch models at 28 kg. For the 85 inch, Microsoft says to keep it upright and always use at least two people. For the 50 inch, it says to get someone to help and lift from the bottom. If the glass is broken, chipped or cracked, Microsoft advises not touching it and arranging a screen replacement.
When It Needs a Repair
Book a diagnosis if:
- The Hub still will not power on after the steps above.
- The USB recovery fails on your Hub but works on another one.
- The glass is cracked, or there are lines, dark patches or dead touch zones.
- The camera, microphones or speakers fail after a recovery and fresh setup.
- The Hub is outside Microsoft's warranty and you want a repair rather than a replacement.
Microsoft lists the compute cartridge with its removable SSD, the Smart Camera and the pens as user-replaceable parts on Surface Hub 3. Faults in the display, touch layer, power supply or internal boards are workshop jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Surface Hub still supported by Microsoft?
It depends on the model. Microsoft says Surface Hub v1 is no longer supported. Windows 10 Team reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so a Surface Hub 2S needs a Windows 11 based platform such as Teams Rooms on Windows. Microsoft lists firmware servicing for Hub 2S until January 11, 2027 and for Hub 3 until December 30, 2030.
What should I try before booking a Surface Hub repair?
Microsoft's steps for Hub 2S and Hub 3 are: remove everything except Ethernet and power, use a dedicated outlet, disconnect any APC mobile battery, try another cord and outlet, hold the power button for at least 20 seconds, then reseat the compute cartridge. If the software is broken, a USB recovery reinstalls factory settings.
Will a USB recovery delete everything on my Surface Hub?
Yes. Microsoft's USB recovery reinstalls the Hub to factory settings, which removes accounts, data and configuration, and it works even without the BitLocker key or admin password. Afterwards you run first time setup again and re-enrol the Hub in Intune if you manage it that way. Choose the recovery image that matches your model.
Can a cracked Surface Hub screen be repaired?
A cracked panel needs replacing, and Microsoft advises not touching broken, chipped or cracked glass. Microsoft also states that a cracked screen caused by misuse is not covered by its limited warranty. We start with a free diagnosis and a written quote before any work, and the repair carries a 90-day warranty.
