Microsoft Surface Not Turning On? Find the Fix for Your Model

A Surface that stays black when you press power is usually one of four things: the display is off while the device is running, the battery is fully drained, the charger or port has failed, or the firmware has hung. All four look identical from the outside. Work through the checks below in order, then use the guide for your model.

Check the Screen Is Not Just Asleep

A Surface can be fully on with the display off. With a keyboard attached, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. If you hear a beep, see the keyboard light up, or the screen wakes, the device was running all along and the problem is the display driver, not power.

Charge It Properly First

• Plug in the original charger and leave it for at least 15 minutes before trying again. A completely drained battery will not start until it has some charge.
• Look at the light on the Surface Connect plug. No light usually means the charger, the cable or the wall socket, not the Surface.
• On models with USB-C, try a known-good USB-C charger. If USB-C works and Surface Connect does not, the port or the original charger is at fault.
• Unplug everything else: Type Cover, docks, USB devices and memory cards.

Force Restart: the Right Steps for Your Model

Microsoft documents two different procedures, and using the wrong one is the most common reason a reset seems not to work.

Most current models (Surface Pro 5 and newer, every Surface Laptop and Laptop Go, Surface Go, Surface Book 2 and Book 3): press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds, until the Surface logo appears, then release.

Older models (Surface Pro 4, Pro 3, Pro 2, the original Surface Pro and the first Surface Book): press and hold volume up + power together until the screen turns off, and keep holding for at least 15 seconds. Release both, wait 10 seconds, and press power once.

When It Needs a Repair

Stop trying to power it on and bring it in if:

• The screen no longer sits flush, or the case is bulging. That is a swollen battery, and charging it further is unsafe.
• You smell burning, or the device gets hot while switched off.
• It was dropped or got wet shortly before it stopped working.
• The logo appears and then the device shuts off or restarts in a loop.
• None of the steps above changed anything.
