Microsoft Surface Pro Black Screen of Death: Fix Guide Dubai

A Surface Pro with a black screen is usually in one of three states: running with the display asleep or the graphics driver stuck, switched off with a flat battery, or running with a display that has failed. The checks below separate the three in a few minutes, starting with the ones that need no tools. If the Surface shows no sign of life at all, start with the Surface Pro not turning on guide instead.

First: Is the Surface Actually On?

Look and listen before you change anything:

• Does the Type Cover backlight or the Caps Lock light come on when you press a key?
• Do you hear a sound when you plug in the charger or a USB device?
• Does the light on the Surface Connect charger plug come on?
• Is the back of the Surface warm, as if it has been working?

If any answer is yes, the Surface is probably running and the problem is the picture, not the power. Work through the checks below in order.

Quick Checks, in Order

1. Wake the display. With the Type Cover attached, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. This restarts the graphics driver. A short beep or a flicker means Windows received it, and often the picture comes straight back. If the Type Cover is not responding, a USB keyboard works for this too.

2. Close and reopen the keyboard. Fold the Type Cover over the screen, open it again, then press the power button once. Microsoft lists this as a step for a Surface that will not wake.

3. Check where Windows is sending the picture. If the Surface was last used with a monitor or projector, Windows may still be showing the desktop there. Press Windows logo key + P, then press P again and Enter to step through the display modes. Unplug any monitor, dock or adapter.

4. Remove accessories and charge. Disconnect USB drives, memory cards and anything else attached. Then connect the power supply made for your Surface and leave it for at least 15 minutes. If the light on the Surface Connect plug blinks or stays off, the charger or the port is the next suspect.

5. Force a restart, using the steps for your model.

• Surface Pro 5th Gen and later (Pro 6, Pro 7, Pro 7+, Pro 8, Pro 9 and newer) and every Surface Pro X: press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds, until the logo appears, then release.
• Surface Pro 4, Pro 3, Pro 2 and the original Surface Pro: press and hold volume up + power together for at least 15 seconds, until the screen goes dark. The logo may flash; keep holding. Release both, wait 10 seconds, then press power once.

The UEFI Test: Software or Hardware?

UEFI is the Surface's own firmware screen. It loads before Windows, so Windows drivers and settings play no part in what it shows.

1. Shut the Surface down (hold power if you have to) and wait 10 seconds.
2. Press and hold volume up, then press and release power.
3. Keep holding volume up until the UEFI screen appears, then release.

If the UEFI screen appears normally, the display and its connection are working. The black screen comes from Windows: a display driver, an update or a startup fault. Move on to the software fixes below.

If the screen stays black but the Surface shows other signs of being on, the fault is very likely hardware: the display panel, its connector or the display circuit on the board.

Software Fixes When UEFI Works

• Get into Windows safely. If Windows itself stays black, force the Surface off by holding power for 10 seconds, and repeat until the recovery screen appears. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then press F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
• Reinstall the display drivers. In Device Manager, uninstall the Surface panel entry under Monitors and each entry under Display adapters, ticking "Attempt to remove the driver for this device" where it appears. Restart and run Windows Update. Do not do this on a Surface Pro X: Microsoft warns that on Pro X the change cannot be undone without a full reset.
• Install all updates. The Surface app shows driver and firmware status under Help & support.
• Stuck on the logo. If the Microsoft or Surface logo stays on a black screen for several minutes, force a restart. If Windows still does not load, start from a USB recovery drive: insert it, hold volume down, press and release power, and let go of volume down when the logo appears.

Surface Pro Model Notes

• The force restart is the step people most often get wrong. Pro 4 and older use the two-button method; Pro 5th Gen and later use the 20-second hold.
• On a Surface Pro X, leave display drivers alone and use updates or a reset instead.
• A screen that has started to lift away from the frame, or a case that bulges, can mean the battery underneath is swelling. Microsoft describes swelling as one of the conditions its smart charging feature is designed to reduce. Stop charging the device and get it checked rather than pressing the screen back down.

When It Needs a Repair

Stop troubleshooting and book a check if:

• UEFI is black too, while the keyboard lights or sounds show the Surface is running.
• An external monitor shows a picture but the built-in screen does not.
• The screen flickered, showed lines or had a dark patch before it went black.
• It went black after a drop, a crack or a spill.
• The screen is lifting or the case is bulging.
• The logo appears and the screen goes black again in a loop, even after a USB recovery drive.
