Surface Pro Type Cover or Signature Keyboard not detected? Step-by-step fixes plus when the cover itself needs replacement. Key Takeaways

  • Detach the cover, clear the magnetic connector on both halves, force a restart and reattach it before anything else.
  • If the Caps and Fn lights stay dark when you press them, Microsoft points to a hardware fault.
  • If the keys work in UEFI but not in Windows, the cause is software and Reset this PC is the next step.
  • Testing a second cover of the same generation shows whether the cover or the connector on the Surface has failed.

When a Surface Pro Type Cover stops typing, the cause is usually dirt or a poor seat on the magnetic connector, a driver or update problem in Windows, or a fault in either the cover or the connector on the tablet. Microsoft's troubleshooting order separates these without tools, and two quick tests tell you which half has failed. The steps apply to any Surface Pro keyboard that clips magnetically to the bottom edge, whether it is labelled Type Cover, Surface Pro Keyboard or Signature Keyboard.

Before You Start

  • If you need to type during these steps, plug in a USB keyboard or use the touchscreen and the on-screen keyboard.
  • Note exactly what the cover does: nothing at all, drops out at random, works on and off, or fails on some keys. Microsoft treats a dead cover and a cover with misbehaving keys differently.
  • The Surface Pro Flex Keyboard also works when detached, and Microsoft has a separate troubleshooting article for it. The steps below are for covers that work while attached.

Quick Checks, in Order

1. Check for updates in the Surface app. Open the Surface app, expand Help & support, and install anything pending through Windows Update. The Get help option in the same app can also report problems it detects. Microsoft publishes keyboard updates for the Surface Pro Keyboard too, and the Surface app is the starting point for them.

2. Detach and inspect the connector. Unplug the charger and pull the cover off. Look at both halves of the connection: the row of contacts on the cover's spine and the connector along the bottom edge of the tablet. Remove crumbs, dust or anything stuck to the magnets, and look for damage such as bent, dented or discoloured contacts.

3. Force a restart, using the steps for your model.

  • Surface Pro 5th Gen and later, and every Surface Pro X: choose Start > Power > Shut down and wait for it to switch off. Then press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds. If the logo appears early, keep holding until it appears again, then release.
  • Surface Pro 4, Pro 3, Pro 2 and the original Surface Pro: press and hold volume up + power together for at least 15 seconds, until the screen goes dark, even if the logo flashes. Release both, wait 10 seconds, then press power once.

4. Reattach the cover. Bring it up to the bottom edge so that all of the magnets meet the tablet along the full length of the spine.

5. Run the LED test. Press Caps and then Fn a few times and watch the small lights on those keys. If they switch on and off, the cover is getting power through the connector. If they stay dark, Microsoft points to a likely hardware fault.

6. Check keyboard accessibility settings. If the Surface beeps when you press Ctrl or Alt, or ignores repeated presses of the same key, Sticky Keys or Filter Keys may have been switched on. In Windows 11 go to Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard; in Windows 10 go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard. Turn off anything you did not mean to enable.

7. Clean keys that stick or repeat. Blow debris out with compressed air, or brush the keys gently with a soft dusting brush. Microsoft treats keys that keep repeating or dropping after cleaning as a hardware failure.

The UEFI Test: Software or Hardware?

If the LEDs work but typing still fails, Microsoft's next step is to test the keys in UEFI, the Surface's own firmware screen that runs before Windows.

  1. Turn the Surface off and wait 10 seconds.
  2. Press and hold volume up, then press and release power.
  3. Keep holding volume up through the logo until the UEFI screen appears, then let go.
  4. Press the up and down arrow keys on the cover and watch the menu on the left move. Do not change any settings.

On business models that show a Devices page in UEFI, Microsoft also suggests disabling the Type Cover port there, leaving UEFI, opening it again and re-enabling the port.

If the keys work in UEFI but not in Windows, the cause is likely software. Microsoft's fix is Reset this PC: search for reset from Start, select Reset this PC, then choose Keep my files and Cloud download. Your personal files stay, but apps and drivers you installed are removed, so back up first. If you installed a clean or custom Windows image yourself, the keyboard drivers may be missing; install Microsoft's driver package for your model.

If the keys do not work in UEFI either, the fault is in hardware: the cover, the connector on the tablet, or the circuit behind it.

Cover or Surface: Which One Has Failed?

A dark LED test or a UEFI failure tells you the fault is hardware, but not which half. A second cover made for your generation of Surface Pro answers that.

When It Needs a Repair

Book a check if:

  • The Caps and Fn lights stay dark after cleaning, a forced restart and reattaching.
  • The keys fail in UEFI as well as in Windows.
  • A cover that works elsewhere also fails on your Surface.
  • The connector on the tablet's bottom edge looks bent, dented, discoloured or loose.
  • It stopped working after a drop onto the bottom edge or after a spill.
  • It types when you press the cover against the tablet but drops out when you let go.

If the cover itself has failed, Microsoft's suggestion for an out-of-warranty Surface Pro is a new keyboard. If the fault is in the Surface, the connector or the board behind it needs a repair. Every repair starts with a free diagnosis and a written quote before any work, with free pickup anywhere in Dubai and a 90-day warranty on the repair. Most port jobs are finished the same day; board-level work usually takes 48 to 72 hours. Message us on WhatsApp or use the quote form. Repair pages: Surface Pro Type Cover port repair, Surface keyboard repair, Surface Pro water damage repair and Surface Pro repair. Typical costs are on the Surface repair price list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Surface Pro Type Cover not working?

Usually the magnetic connector has dirt on it or is not seated, an update or driver has failed in Windows, or the cover or the port on the tablet has a hardware fault. Detach the cover, clean both halves of the connector, force a restart, reattach it, then install updates from the Surface app before testing again.

How do I test if my Surface Pro keyboard is faulty?

Press Caps and Fn a few times. If their lights stay dark, Microsoft points to a hardware fault. If they light but typing fails, open UEFI by holding volume up while you press and release power, then use the arrow keys. Keys that work in UEFI but not in Windows point to software.

Is it the Type Cover or my Surface Pro that is broken?

Try a second cover made for your generation of Surface Pro. If a different cover works, your cover has failed. If your cover works on another Surface Pro, or no cover works on yours, the connector on the bottom edge of your Surface or the board behind it is at fault and needs a repair.

When should a Surface Pro Type Cover problem be repaired?

Get it checked when the Caps and Fn lights stay dark, keys fail in UEFI, a known working cover also fails, or the connector on the tablet looks damaged after a drop or spill. Diagnosis is free, you get a written quote before any work, pickup is free anywhere in Dubai and the repair has a 90-day warranty.
