Microsoft Surface Pro 12 Review for Dubai Buyers

Surface Pro 12-inch (1st Edition) is Microsoft's smaller Surface Pro: a 12-inch Snapdragon tablet that charges over USB-C, takes its own keyboard and stores the pen on its back. This guide sets out what it is according to Microsoft's spec pages, how it differs from the 13-inch Surface Pro (11th Edition), how to look after it in Dubai's heat, and what to do if something stops working. It is an overview drawn from Microsoft's documentation, not a review based on testing the device. Microsoft has since listed a 12-inch 2nd Edition with a Snapdragon X2 Plus processor, so check which one you have under Device information in the Surface app.

What It Is, per Microsoft

• Processor: Snapdragon X Plus (8 Core), with a Qualcomm Hexagon NPU. It is a Copilot+ PC.
• Screen: a 12-inch PixelSense LCD touchscreen, 2196 x 1464 pixels in a 3:2 shape, with a refresh rate up to 90Hz and 60Hz as the default.
• Ports: two USB-C ports, listed as USB 3.2 on Microsoft's consumer feature page. There is no Surface Connect port.
• Charging: through either USB-C port with a USB-C PD charger. Microsoft recommends at least 27W, and 45W or more for fast charging. Depending on the market and configuration, a charger may not be in the box.
• Keyboard: the Surface Pro 12-inch Keyboard, sold separately. Microsoft states the 13-inch Surface Pro keyboards do not fit.
• Pen: the Surface Slim Pen, sold separately, stores and charges on the back of the tablet.
• Kickstand: a full-friction hinge that opens to 165 degrees.
• Weight: 686 g without the keyboard.
• Buttons: power and volume, plus a Windows Hello face sign-in camera and front and rear cameras.

Business versions are sold as Surface Pro for Business, 12-inch, with Windows 11 Pro and different memory options.

How It Differs From Earlier Surface Pro Models

The closest comparison is Surface Pro (11th Edition), the 13-inch model from the same period.

In practice this means three changes for an owner. Chargers and docks built around Surface Connect will not plug in, so the 12-inch relies on USB-C for power and accessories. Repair and Serviceability

Microsoft describes the 12-inch as a more repairable design and lists replacement components for it, including the display module, battery, motherboard, thermal module, USB-C module, speakers, cameras, power and volume buttons, kickstand and enclosure. Microsoft says these parts are intended for out-of-warranty repair.

Two details are worth knowing:

• Storage is part of the motherboard. Microsoft lists processor, memory and storage together as one motherboard component, so there is no separate SSD to remove. If the board fails, the data goes with it. Keep regular backups, with OneDrive or an external drive.
• The USB-C ports are their own module. Because charging runs through USB-C, a worn or damaged port is a charging fault, and Microsoft lists the USB-C module as a separate part from the board.

Looking After It in Dubai's Heat

Microsoft designs Surface devices to operate between 0 and 35 degrees Celsius. It advises keeping them out of direct sun and out of hot cars, and says charging or running a Surface at high temperatures speeds up battery ageing and can permanently reduce how much charge it holds. For a slim tablet carried around Dubai, that means:

• Do not leave it in a parked car, on a dashboard or on a sunny balcony, even switched off.
• Let it cool to room temperature before charging after time outdoors.
• Expect smart charging to hold the battery short of full when it is plugged in for long periods or used in heat. A heart on the battery icon shows this, and depending on the model the Surface app lets you charge to full when you need it.
• If it stays on the charger at a desk, use Battery Limit mode where your model offers it.
• Keep sand and grit out of the USB-C ports, and never push anything metal into them.

What to Do if Something Fails

• Will not turn on: unplug accessories, charge for at least 15 minutes with a suitable USB-C PD charger, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B, then hold the power button for about 20 seconds until the logo appears. The full sequence is in the Surface Pro not turning on guide.
• Will not charge: try the other USB-C port and a different charger that meets Microsoft's wattage, and look at the battery icon. An exclamation mark means the charger is not supplying enough power.
• Keyboard not responding: detach and reattach it, make sure it is the 12-inch keyboard, and install updates from the Surface app.
• Screen flicker: follow the Surface screen flickering guide.
• Cracked screen or a spill: switch it off, do not charge it, and back up as soon as it is safe to do so.
• Swelling: if the back or screen starts to lift, stop using it. Microsoft's advice for a visibly expanded battery is to stop and handle the device carefully.
