Key Takeaways

  • Microsoft's USB-C reset is to unplug, shut down, wait 10 seconds, hold power for about 20 seconds and reconnect.
  • Many USB-C faults are the cable, hub or charger, so test directly with the cable that came with the device.
  • A Surface cannot charge from Surface Connect and USB-C at the same time, and a low-wattage charger may not charge it at all.
  • A loose plug, or a port that fails with every cable, points to a damaged port that needs a repair.

When a Surface Pro USB-C port stops working, the cause is often the cable, hub, charger or a stuck connection state rather than a broken port. Microsoft's first fix is to unplug the device, shut down, wait 10 seconds, then hold the power button for about 20 seconds and reconnect. If the port still fails with a known-good cable plugged in directly, or the plug feels loose, the port needs a hardware check.

What the USB-C Port Does on Surface Pro

Microsoft lists the jobs a Surface USB-C port can do: charge your Surface, charge other devices, send video to an external monitor, transfer files and connect accessories. Not every model has the same ports:

  • Surface Pro 7: one USB-C and one USB-A port, plus Surface Connect.
  • Surface Pro 8: two USB-C ports with USB4 and Thunderbolt 4, plus Surface Connect.
  • Surface Pro (11th Edition): two USB-C ports with USB4, plus Surface Connect.
  • Surface Pro 12-inch: two USB-C ports. Microsoft does not list a Surface Connect port, and its parts list names USB-C as the charging port.

Knowing your model matters. On a Pro 12-inch, a USB-C fault affects charging as well as accessories. On models with Surface Connect, the Surface can still charge from its own charger while a USB-C port is faulty.

Microsoft's USB-C Reset

  1. Unplug your USB-C device.
  2. Select Start > Power > Shut down.
  3. Wait 10 seconds.
  4. Press and hold the power button for about 20 seconds, until the Windows logo appears, disappears and appears again.
  5. Plug in your USB-C device again.

Microsoft lists this as the first thing to try for any USB-C port problem on Surface.

If a Device Is Not Recognised

  • Plug it in directly. If you use a hub or dock, connect the device straight to the Surface.
  • Unplug and replug. Give it a firm, straight push.
  • Use the cable that came with the device. Microsoft notes that not all USB-C cables support every feature, so a cable that charges may still not carry data or video.
  • Give it power. If the device has its own power supply, plug it in. If Windows says the device might need more power, plug the Surface into its charger rather than running on battery, and unplug USB devices you are not using.
  • Read the notification. Windows shows messages such as "Slow charger", "PC isn't charging" and "Display connection might be limited". Each one points to a cause: the charger, the cable, or a port or display that does not support the feature you need.

If It Will Not Charge Through USB-C

  • Use a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) charger rated at least as high as the power supply made for your Surface. Microsoft says a lower-wattage charger, or a USB-A charger with a USB-A to USB-C cable, may charge slowly or not at all.
  • Use one charger at a time. Microsoft states a Surface cannot charge from Surface Connect and USB-C together; with both plugged in, it charges from Surface Connect.
  • Check the port is clean. Windows' own advice for a slow or failed charge includes cleaning the port. Look inside with a torch for lint or grit, and never push metal into it.

If the Surface will not charge from any port, read the Surface Pro charging port guide. If it is completely dead, start with the Surface Pro not turning on guide.

If an External Display Stays Blank

  1. Set the monitor's input to the port you are using, such as USB-C, DisplayPort or HDMI.
  2. Check the monitor's on-screen menu for a port version setting and try another one.
  3. Press Windows logo key + P and choose Duplicate or Extend.
  4. Remove the adapter and reinsert it firmly. USB-C adapters have no switch or lights, so if one does not respond, remove it, restart and try again.
  5. Try another monitor or TV. If it fails there too, the adapter may be faulty.

Updates First, Then Hardware

Open the Surface app, expand Help & support and select Check for updates to install drivers and firmware through Windows Update. Microsoft's update history for Surface Pro 12-inch, for example, includes a fix for external monitors not being detected over USB-C, so updates can fix faults that look like hardware.

A port that works just when you hold the plug at an angle, or that has visible damage, will not improve with software. Stop forcing the plug, because that can make the damage worse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Surface Pro USB-C port not working?

Common causes are a cable that does not support the feature you need, a hub or dock, a low-wattage charger or a port stuck after sleep. Unplug the device, shut down, wait 10 seconds, hold power for about 20 seconds and reconnect. Then test directly with the cable that came with the device.

Why will my Surface Pro not charge through USB-C?

Microsoft says to use a USB-C PD charger rated at least as high as your Surface power supply. A lower-wattage charger or a USB-A charger with an adapter cable may charge slowly or not at all. With Surface Connect also plugged in, the Surface charges from Surface Connect instead.

My Surface Pro will not show anything on a monitor over USB-C. What should I try?

Set the monitor input to the port you are using, check its port version setting, and press Windows logo key + P to choose Duplicate or Extend. Reseat the adapter, try another display, and install updates through the Surface app. If nothing works with any cable or display, have the port checked.

Can a broken Surface Pro USB-C port be repaired?

Yes. A worn, loose or damaged USB-C port can be repaired after a diagnosis confirms the fault is the port and not the cable, charger or board. You get a free diagnosis and a written quote before any work, with free pickup anywhere in Dubai and a 90-day warranty on the repair.
