Key Takeaways

  • Test the same network on another device first to tell a router problem from a Surface problem.
  • The Network Adapter troubleshooter, an Airplane mode toggle and a force restart fix many Surface Pro Wi-Fi faults.
  • Reinstalling the Wi-Fi driver helps on most models, but Microsoft warns against uninstalling drivers on Surface Pro X.
  • A Wi-Fi adapter missing from Device Manager after updates and a reset points to a hardware fault.

When a Surface Pro will not connect to Wi-Fi, the cause is usually the network, a setting or the Wi-Fi driver rather than broken hardware. Confirm Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off, test the network on another device, then work through Microsoft's steps: the Network Adapter troubleshooter, a force restart and a fresh driver. If the Wi-Fi adapter disappears from Device Manager or Wi-Fi fails after a reset, it needs a hardware check.

First, Is It the Surface or the Network?

Microsoft's first test is simple: try the same network on another device, such as a tablet or a second laptop.

  • Other devices connect, the Surface does not. The problem is on the Surface. Carry on with this guide.
  • Nothing connects. The router, modem or internet line is the likely cause. Restart the modem and the router, then reconnect. If other devices still cannot browse, contact your internet provider or the equipment maker.

Before going further, open Start > Settings > Network & internet and check three things: Wi-Fi is on, Airplane mode is off, and you are using the right network password. A mistyped password is one of the reasons Microsoft lists for a failed connection.

Quick Fixes in Windows

  1. Run the Network Adapter troubleshooter. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Network Adapter and select Run. Follow the prompts.
  2. Toggle Airplane mode. Go to Settings > Network & internet > Airplane mode, turn it on, then off again. Then open Wi-Fi and confirm it is on.
  3. Forget and rejoin the network. Go to Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, select your network and choose Forget. Reconnect and enter the password again.
  4. Try the other band. If your router shows separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, connect to the one you have not tried.
  5. Turn off any proxy. Under Settings > Network & internet > Proxy, switch off a manual proxy you did not set on purpose.

Force Restart

Microsoft includes a force restart in its Wi-Fi steps. Select Start > Power > Shut down and wait for the screen to go dark. Then:

  • Surface Pro 5th Gen and later, including Pro X: hold the power button for about 20 seconds until the logo appears.
  • Surface Pro 4 and older: hold volume up and power together for at least 15 seconds, release, wait 10 seconds, then press power.

The Wi-Fi Adapter and Its Driver

Open Device Manager from the taskbar search and expand Network adapters. Microsoft names the adapter you should see by model:

AdapterSurface Pro models
Intel Wi-Fi 7 BE201Surface Pro for Business (11th Edition) and later
Intel Wi-Fi 6 familyIntel-based Surface Pro 7 and later
Qualcomm Wi-Fi Network AdapterPro X, Pro 9 with 5G, Pro (11th Edition), Pro 12-inch

  1. Disable and enable it. Double-click the adapter, open the Driver tab, select Disable Device and confirm, then select Enable Device. Restart from Start > Power > Restart.
  2. Reinstall the driver. On the same Driver tab, select Uninstall Device, tick the option to remove the driver for this device, then Uninstall and restart. Do not do this on Surface Pro X. Microsoft warns that restoring its drivers afterwards needs a full system reset.
  3. Install updates. If you can get online by any other route, go to Settings > Windows Update and install everything, or open the Surface app, expand Help & support and select Check for updates. With no internet on the Surface at all, download the driver and firmware package for your model on another PC, copy it to a USB drive, and install it on the Surface.

If the adapter is missing from Network adapters entirely, or shows a warning symbol that survives updates and a restart, Windows cannot see the Wi-Fi hardware. That is a strong sign of a hardware fault.

Network Reset as the Last Software Step

Go to Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset and select Reset now. Microsoft explains that this removes and reinstalls your network adapters and returns their settings to default. You may need to set up VPN software again afterwards. If Wi-Fi still fails after a network reset and a full Windows reset, software is no longer the likely cause.

Microsoft's spec pages list Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) for Surface Pro 7 and Pro 8. On Surface Pro 9, Microsoft lists a camera and Wi-Fi deck as a replacement part, so a faulty wireless module on that model can be replaced without changing the main board. On other models the Wi-Fi hardware is diagnosed on the board itself.

If the Surface Pro also has trouble starting, see the Surface Pro not turning on guide first.

Getting It Repaired

Book a check if the adapter has vanished, Wi-Fi fails after a reset, or the problem began after a drop or spill. Every repair starts with a free diagnosis and a written quote before any work, with free pickup anywhere in Dubai and a 90-day warranty on the repair; board-level work usually takes 48 to 72 hours. Useful pages: Surface Pro full diagnostic, Surface motherboard repair, Surface Pro OS reinstall and Surface Pro repair in Dubai.

Message us on WhatsApp or use the quote form on this page, and say whether the Wi-Fi adapter still appears in Device Manager.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Surface Pro not show any Wi-Fi networks?

Check that Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off, then toggle Airplane mode on and off. If networks still do not appear, force restart the Surface and look under Network adapters in Device Manager. A missing adapter after updates and a restart usually means the Wi-Fi hardware is not being detected.

How do I reinstall the Wi-Fi driver on a Surface Pro?

Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, double-click your adapter and select Uninstall Device on the Driver tab, ticking the option to remove the driver. Restart and Windows reinstalls it. Do not do this on Surface Pro X, because Microsoft says restoring its drivers then needs a full system reset.

My Surface Pro connects to Wi-Fi but has no internet. What now?

Test another device on the same network. If nothing can browse, restart the modem and router and contact your provider if it continues. If other devices work, forget and rejoin the network, turn off any manual proxy and run the Network Adapter troubleshooter, then try a network reset.

Can a Surface Pro Wi-Fi fault be repaired?

Yes. Software causes are fixed with drivers, updates or a reset. If the adapter is missing or fails after a reset, the hardware is checked. On Surface Pro 9 Microsoft lists a camera and Wi-Fi deck as a replacement part. You get a free diagnosis and a written quote before any work.
