Should you choose Snapdragon or Intel Surface Pro? Real-world differences in repair, performance, and app support. On Surface Pro 11th Edition the Snapdragon and Intel versions share the body, the removable SSD and almost the same list of replaceable parts. OEM Microsoft parts on every repair, no appointment needed, 90-day written warranty. Rated 4.9★ from 223+ Google reviews.

Key Takeaways

  • On Surface Pro 11th Edition the Snapdragon and Intel versions share the body, the removable SSD and almost the same list of replaceable parts.
  • The processor and memory are part of the motherboard on both chips, so neither can be replaced on its own.
  • Surface Pro 12-inch keeps its storage on the motherboard, so backups matter more on that model.
  • On Arm, a peripheral that fails may need an Arm64 driver rather than a repair, so test it elsewhere first.

For repair, a Snapdragon Surface Pro and an Intel Surface Pro of the same edition are far closer than most people expect. On Surface Pro 11th Edition both versions share the 13-inch body, the removable SSD, the Surface Connect port and almost the same list of replaceable parts in Microsoft's documentation. The real differences are which models exist in which version, where the storage sits on newer compact models, and a group of software and driver issues on Arm that can look like hardware faults.

Which Surface Pro Models Use Which Chip

Microsoft's Arm FAQ names Surface Pro 11th Edition with Snapdragon, Surface Pro 9 with 5G and Surface Pro X as Arm-based, and the Surface Pro 12-inch also runs a Snapdragon chip. Older Surface Pro models use Intel, and some newer ones come in both versions.

To check yours, open the Surface app and expand Device information, where the Surface model is listed. You can also search Start for System Information and read the System Model or System SKU line.

What Is the Same for Repair

Microsoft publishes replaceable component lists for both versions of Surface Pro 11th Edition, and they match closely: display module, removable SSD and its door, battery, motherboard, Surface Connect port, thermal module, mic module, speakers, enclosure, front and rear cameras, power and volume buttons, kickstand and the device entry kit. On the Intel version the mic module includes the IR camera used for Windows Hello. The 5G Snapdragon models add a SIM card connector.

A few points follow from that:

  • The processor and memory are part of the motherboard on both. Microsoft lists the motherboard as including the main processor and main memory, so neither chip can be swapped on its own.
  • Your data sits on a removable SSD on both 11th Edition versions. That makes data easier to protect when the motherboard is the faulty part.
  • Charging is the same. Microsoft lists a 39W minimum and 60W for fast charging on both, through USB-C or Surface Connect.

So a cracked screen, a worn battery or a damaged charging port is the same job on either chip.

Where They Differ on the Bench

The differences are model by model rather than Snapdragon against Intel as a rule.

  • Surface Pro 9 and Surface Pro 9 with 5G. Microsoft lists a camera and Wi-Fi deck for the Intel model and a camera deck for the 5G model, and notes the 5G enclosure is available in select markets.
  • Surface Pro 12-inch. Storage is UFS, and Microsoft lists the motherboard as including processor, memory and storage. A board fault therefore affects the data as well, which makes regular backups more important on this model. It charges through USB-C, with a 27W minimum and 45W for fast charging, and has no Surface Connect port.
  • Surface Pro 11th Edition with 5G. The SIM card connector is a separate part and is part of the diagnosis when mobile data stops working.

Software Problems That Look Like Hardware on Arm

Windows on Arm runs most apps natively or through Prism, Microsoft's emulator for x86 and x64 apps. Microsoft also lists limits, and each can be mistaken for a broken port or a faulty device:

  • Drivers must be built for Arm. A printer, scanner or other peripheral works when its driver is built into Windows 11 or the maker has released an Arm64 driver.
  • Some third-party antivirus software will not install unless it is made for Arm.
  • Games that rely on anti-cheat drivers not updated for Arm, or on OpenGL above version 3.3, might not work.
  • Input method editors, some assistive technology and some cloud storage clients might have problems.
  • Windows Fax and Scan is not available on Arm-based devices.

Before booking a repair on a Snapdragon Surface Pro, run these checks:

  1. Try the device on another Surface or PC. If a USB accessory works elsewhere but not here, look for an Arm64 driver from its maker.
  2. Plug something simple into the same port, such as a USB drive or a charger. If that works, the port is fine.
  3. Run Windows Update and open the Surface app to bring Windows, drivers and firmware up to date.
  4. For an app that misbehaves, right-click its program file, select Properties, open the Compatibility tab and try the Windows on Arm emulation settings. Microsoft notes these can improve compatibility, usually at some cost to performance.
  5. Check with the app's publisher whether an Arm version exists.

The same checks are worth doing on Intel models too, since a missing driver can affect either.

When It Is Hardware

Book a check if any of these apply, whichever chip you have:

  • The screen is cracked, shows lines or does not respond to touch.
  • It will not charge through either the USB-C ports or Surface Connect.
  • The battery drains far faster than it did, or the back is bulging.
  • A port fails with every device you plug in, including a simple charger.
  • It does not start after a force restart: hold the power button for about 20 seconds until the logo appears.
  • It was dropped or got wet.

For the earlier Arm model, see the Surface Pro X repair guide. If you are choosing between current models, the Surface Pro 11 vs 12 comparison and the Surface Pro 12 owner's guide cover the differences.

Every repair starts with a free diagnosis and a written quote, with walk-ins welcome at our Concord Tower workshop in Dubai Media City (by car, metro or on foot) and a 90-day warranty on the repair. Screens, batteries and Type Cover ports are usually same day; board-level work usually takes 48 to 72 hours. See Surface Pro repair in Dubai, or Surface Pro data recovery if the files matter most. Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Snapdragon Surface Pro harder to repair than an Intel one?

Not on the 11th Edition. Microsoft lists nearly the same replaceable parts for both versions, including the display, battery, removable SSD, Surface Connect port and motherboard. The processor and memory sit on the motherboard on both. Differences come from the model, such as storage on the board in the Surface Pro 12-inch, rather than from the chip.

Why does my printer or USB device not work on my Snapdragon Surface Pro?

On Arm-based Windows, drivers must be built for Arm. Microsoft says peripherals work when their driver is built into Windows 11 or the maker has released an Arm64 driver. Test the device on another computer and try a simple accessory in the same port. If both work, look for an Arm64 driver before suspecting the port.

Can the processor or memory be upgraded on a Surface Pro?

No. Microsoft lists the motherboard as including the main processor and main memory on Surface Pro 11th Edition, and processor, memory and storage on the Surface Pro 12-inch. A fault in any of them means a motherboard repair or replacement. On 11th Edition models the removable SSD is separate, which helps keep your data.

How do I know if my Surface Pro is Snapdragon or Intel?

Open the Surface app and expand Device information to see the Surface model, or search Start for System Information and read the System Model line. Microsoft's Arm-based Surface Pro models are Surface Pro 11th Edition with Snapdragon, Surface Pro 12-inch, Surface Pro 9 with 5G and Surface Pro X.
