Practical fixes for a slow Surface Pro. Software tweaks first, then hardware causes that need professional attention. Power mode, missing updates, startup apps, a nearly full drive and heat cause most slow Surface Pro problems. We use only OEM Microsoft components, collect free anywhere in Dubai, and warrant every job for 90 days. Rated 4.9★ from 223+ Google reviews.

Key Takeaways

  • Power mode, missing updates, startup apps, a nearly full drive and heat cause most slow Surface Pro problems.
  • Choose a performance power mode, install updates through the Surface app and restart before trying anything drastic.
  • Windows Memory Diagnostic and Error checking help separate a software slowdown from a memory or drive fault.
  • A Surface Pro that is still slow after a clean Windows reset has a hardware problem that needs a diagnosis.

Most slow Surface Pro problems come from the power mode, missing updates, too many startup apps, a nearly full drive or heat. Microsoft's own fixes are to choose a performance power mode, install updates through the Surface app, let the device cool and restart it. If it is still slow after a reset, or it freezes and crashes, the storage drive, memory or cooling may need a hardware check.

Five Quick Checks First

  1. Restart properly. Select Start > Power > Restart, which is Microsoft's own basic step for a slow Surface.
  2. Plug it in. Microsoft suggests plugging in where possible, and the power mode can be set differently on battery and on charge. If it is slow on battery but fine when plugged in, the battery setting is the first suspect.
  3. Change the power mode. Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and pick Better performance or the highest setting offered. It uses more battery and lets the device run warmer, with a busier fan.
  4. Let it cool. Microsoft says a hot Surface can run slower. Move it somewhere cooler, wait five minutes, and close demanding apps such as streaming video or games for a while.
  5. See what is busy. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager and sort by CPU, memory and disk to see which apps are using the most resources.

Windows Performance Settings

Microsoft's Windows performance tips cover the settings that slow a machine over months of use:

  • Updates. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Under Advanced options > Optional updates you may also find newer drivers.
  • Startup apps. In Task Manager, open Startup apps, right-click anything you do not need at sign-in and choose Disable.
  • Storage. Go to Settings > System > Storage and turn on Storage Sense, or run Clean now. Review what is selected before you delete it.
  • Visual effects. Search Start for "Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows" and, on the Visual Effects tab, choose the option that adjusts for performance.
  • Malware. Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection and run a Quick scan.

If your Surface Pro still runs Windows 10, note that Microsoft ended support for it on October 14, 2025 and recommends moving to Windows 11.

Microsoft's Surface Tools

Surface app. Open it, expand Help & support and check driver and firmware status. Select Check for updates to install anything waiting through Windows Update. Microsoft's update history for Surface Pro 12-inch, for example, lists firmware that speeds up waking from sleep and improves battery life, so do this before anything drastic.

Surface Diagnostic Toolkit. Search Start for it, or install it free from the Microsoft Store, and follow the on-screen tests.

Windows Memory Diagnostic. Type "memory" in the taskbar search, open Windows Memory Diagnostic and choose to restart and check for problems. The test can look idle while it runs; Windows restarts on its own when it finishes.

Error checking. In File Explorer, select This PC, right-click Windows (C:), choose Properties > Tools and select Check under Error checking.

Reset as the Last Software Step

If none of that helps, back up your files and reset Windows. Go to Settings > System > Recovery and select Reset PC next to Reset this PC. You can keep your files or remove everything; both options remove the apps and drivers you installed, so have your installers and product keys ready. Microsoft recommends the cloud download option, which needs an internet connection. If the reset itself fails, install Windows updates first and try again.

A Surface Pro that is still slow on a freshly reset Windows has a hardware problem, not a software one.

Storage. Microsoft lists a removable SSD (rSSD) and its door as replacement parts for Surface Pro 7+, Pro 8, Pro 9, Pro 10 for Business, Pro (11th Edition) and Pro X. Surface Pro 7 and Pro 12-inch are not on that list. If Error checking reports problems, copy your files off first; our Surface Pro data recovery service can help if the drive will not read.

Heat. Microsoft says a Surface that is too hot can run slower, and a failing fan keeps it hot. The Surface Pro overheating guide explains what is normal and what is not.

Getting It Checked

Book a check if it is slow after a clean reset, if the memory test or Error checking reports faults, or if it freezes under light use. If you would rather not reset it yourself, we can reinstall Windows with your files backed up first: see Surface Pro OS reinstall and Surface Pro virus removal. Every job starts with a free diagnosis and a written quote before any work, with free pickup anywhere in Dubai and a 90-day warranty on the repair; board-level work usually takes 48 to 72 hours. More options are on the Surface Pro repair in Dubai page.

Message us on WhatsApp or use the quote form on this page, with your model and what you were doing when it slowed down.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Surface Pro so slow all of a sudden?

Common causes are a power mode set for battery saving, pending updates, a new app launching at startup, a nearly full drive or heat. Restart, plug it in, choose a performance power mode and check Task Manager for a busy app. Then install updates through the Surface app and see whether it recovers.

Does the power mode really make a Surface Pro faster?

Yes. Microsoft's first suggestion for a slow Surface is to choose a performance power mode under Settings > System > Power & battery. The setting can differ on battery and on charge. Higher modes use more battery and let the device run warmer, so the fan may spin faster and sound louder.

Will resetting Windows fix a slow Surface Pro?

It fixes slowness caused by software, such as clutter, bad drivers or unwanted apps. Back up first, then use Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC. Both reset options remove the apps you installed. If it is still slow on a fresh Windows, the cause is hardware, such as the drive, memory or cooling.

Can you upgrade the storage on a slow Surface Pro?

On several models, yes. Microsoft lists a removable SSD as a replacement part for Surface Pro 7+, Pro 8, Pro 9, Pro 10 for Business, Pro (11th Edition) and Pro X. Pro 7 and Pro 12-inch are not on that list. A free diagnosis confirms whether the drive is the cause before any work starts.
