Key Takeaways
- Do not reset a Surface Studio or send it to Microsoft for service until your files are copied, because both erase internal storage.
- Find your BitLocker recovery key first, since Microsoft Support cannot retrieve or recreate a lost key.
- Studio 1st Gen uses a hybrid SSD and hard drive, Studio 2 an SSD, and Studio 2+ a removable SSD that Microsoft lists as a separate part.
- A replacement SSD starts empty, so data has to be recovered from the original drive.
Files on a Surface Studio that will not start, or whose drive is failing, can often still be recovered, provided nobody resets the machine or sends it off for service first. The two things that decide the outcome are the state of the drive and the BitLocker recovery key. Find the key, stop using the Studio, and have the drive read and copied before any repair that could wipe it.
Step One: Stop and Do Not Reset
A well-meant reset can wipe files that were still recoverable. Before anything else:
- Do not choose Reset this PC with Erase everything, or reinstall Windows from a recovery drive. Both remove your files.
- Do not send the Studio to Microsoft for service if you need the data. Microsoft states that data on a Surface's internal storage is erased at its Service Center. Files in Microsoft cloud services such as OneDrive are not affected.
- Do not keep power cycling a Studio that clicks, freezes or crashes repeatedly. If the drive is failing, every extra start puts more strain on it.
- Do not open the base yourself. On Studio 2+, the drive sits under the thermal module, in the same base as an internal mains power supply.
Step Two: Check What Is Already Safe
- OneDrive: sign in at OneDrive on another device. If your Desktop, Documents and Pictures folders were syncing, those files are already safe.
- Windows Backup or an external drive: check for a recent backup.
- Email and cloud apps: attachments and shared files may still be in your mailbox or cloud storage.
Whatever is already safe narrows down what actually needs recovering.
Step Three: Find Your BitLocker Recovery Key
Windows device encryption is turned on automatically when a Surface is set up with a Microsoft account or a work or school account, and the recovery key is attached to that account. If the drive is encrypted, the key is needed to read it outside the Studio or after certain repairs. Microsoft lists these places to look:
- The recovery keys section of your Microsoft account, opened from another device.
- Your work or school account, if the Studio is managed by an organisation; your IT team may hold the key.
- A printout made when encryption was turned on.
- A USB flash drive where the key was saved.
Microsoft Support states that it cannot retrieve, provide or recreate a lost BitLocker recovery key. Without the key, an encrypted drive cannot be read, so find it before anything else happens to the Studio.
How Storage Differs Between Studio Models
| Model | Storage | What it means for recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Surface Studio (1st Gen) | Rapid Hybrid Drive: an SSD paired with a 1TB or 2TB hard drive | Two devices to assess, including a mechanical drive |
| Surface Studio 2 | 1TB or 2TB SSD | Solid-state storage, assessed at diagnosis |
| Surface Studio 2+ | 1TB removable SSD | Microsoft lists it as a separate, removable part |
On Surface Studio 2+, Microsoft's service guide reaches the removable SSD after taking off the feet and thermal module, then lifting out a thermal pad and one screw. Microsoft's guide also says a replacement SSD is imaged with a recovery USB made for the model, which means a new drive starts empty. Your files stay on the old drive, so that is the one to recover from.
For Studio (1st Gen) and Studio 2, Microsoft does not publish a service guide, so access to the drive is confirmed on the unit.
Common Situations
- The Studio will not turn on, but the drive was fine. When the fault is in the power supply or main board, the drive may be unaffected. Recovery means reading it with the key, then repairing the Studio separately. See the Surface Studio not turning on guide.
- Windows will not start, stuck on a recovery screen. The drive may be healthy and Windows damaged, or the drive may be failing. Copy the data off before any repair attempt that rewrites the drive.
- A BitLocker recovery prompt after an update or repair. Enter the key from your Microsoft account. The prompt on its own does not mean the data is lost.
- Accidentally deleted files. Stop using the Studio straight away, since new writes can overwrite what was deleted. Check the Recycle Bin and OneDrive's recycle bin first.
- The drive is failing. Slowness, freezing or file errors can be early signs. Back up immediately while it still runs.
How Recovery Works at the Workshop
- Free diagnosis. We establish whether the fault is the drive, the board, the power supply or Windows.
- Written quote. You see what is involved before any work starts.
- Read and copy. With your recovery key, the data is copied to a separate drive before any repair that might touch the original.
- Check the files with you. You confirm the important folders are there.
- Repair the Studio, if you want. Data recovery and hardware repair are separate decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can data be recovered from a Surface Studio that won't turn on?
Often, yes. When the fault is in the power supply or main board, the drive itself may be unaffected and can be read with your BitLocker recovery key. Do not reset the Studio or send it to Microsoft for service first, because Microsoft states that data on internal storage is erased at its Service Center.
Do I need my BitLocker recovery key for Surface Studio data recovery?
If the drive is encrypted, yes. Device encryption turns on automatically when a Surface is set up with a Microsoft account or a work or school account. Look in the recovery keys section of your Microsoft account, your work account, a printout or a USB drive. Microsoft Support cannot retrieve or recreate a lost key.
Does Microsoft recover data when it repairs a Surface Studio?
No. Microsoft's service FAQ says data on a Surface's internal storage is erased at the Microsoft Service Center, and it recommends backing up first. Files stored in Microsoft cloud services such as OneDrive are not affected. If you need files that are not in the cloud, have the drive read before the Studio goes for service.
Is the SSD removable on a Surface Studio 2+?
Yes. Microsoft lists a removable SSD as a service part for Surface Studio 2+. Its service guide reaches the drive after removing the feet and thermal module. A replacement drive is imaged with a recovery USB for the model and starts empty, so your files have to be recovered from the original drive.
