Surface Studio 28-inch PixelSense display repair: what is possible, what is not, and how it is priced in Dubai. Microsoft's UEFI test separates a hardware screen fault from a Windows or driver problem. Every screen, battery, and board is OEM Microsoft; pickup is free across Dubai; warranty is 90 days. Rated 4.9★ from 223+ Google reviews.

Key Takeaways

  • Microsoft's UEFI test separates a hardware screen fault from a Windows or driver problem.
  • Surface Studio 2+ screens are replaced as a complete display module that is fitted to the existing Zero Gravity hinge.
  • Never clean a Surface touchscreen with glass cleaner or disinfectant wipes, and never spray liquid onto it.
  • Studio 2 and Studio 1st Gen no longer get new Surface drivers or firmware, while Studio 2+ is covered to October 2, 2028.

A Surface Studio screen fault is either a software problem, such as a driver or a setting, or a hardware problem, such as cracked glass, a failed panel or a loose display cable. Microsoft's own UEFI test tells you which: if the fault is still there in UEFI, outside Windows, it is hardware. On Surface Studio 2+, Microsoft's service guide replaces the display as one complete module, so a cracked screen means a new display module rather than new glass on its own.

Know Which Studio You Have

All three generations use a 28-inch PixelSense touchscreen at 4500 x 3000 with a 3:2 shape, but they are different machines inside:

  • Surface Studio (1st Gen): 28-inch touch display, 6th Generation Intel Core processor.
  • Surface Studio 2: same screen size and resolution, newer internals.
  • Surface Studio 2+: 28-inch display with Dolby Vision support and Gorilla Glass 3 cover glass, plus a published Microsoft service guide and self-repair parts.

The Surface app shows your device information, and so does Settings > System > About. The model matters because Microsoft's published repair documents cover the Studio 2+ and not the earlier two.

Quick Checks You Can Do Safely

  1. Clean the screen the right way. Unplug the Studio first. Use a screen-cleaning wipe or a soft, lint-free cloth, lightly dampened if needed. Microsoft says never to use glass cleaner or disinfectant wipes on a Surface touchscreen, and never to spray liquid directly onto the device. Smears and residue can make touch feel erratic.
  2. Disconnect extras. Unplug external monitors, docks and USB devices, then check whether the fault is still there.
  3. Reset the graphics driver. Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B with a keyboard connected.
  4. Force a restart. Microsoft's instruction for every Surface Studio model is to hold the power button for about 20 seconds until the logo appears, then release it.
  5. Install updates. Open the Surface app, expand Help & support and select Check for updates, then run Windows Update. Microsoft's driver and firmware lifecycle runs to October 2, 2028 for Studio 2+. Studio 2 passed its end date on October 2, 2024 and the 1st Gen on November 13, 2021, so those two no longer get new Surface drivers or firmware, although Windows updates continue under the Windows lifecycle.

Microsoft's UEFI Test: Hardware or Software?

UEFI runs before Windows, so it separates a panel fault from a driver fault. Every Studio generation has physical volume and power buttons, which this test needs.

  1. Shut down from Start > Power > Shut down.
  2. Press and hold the volume up button, then press the power button. Keep holding volume up until the logo appears and the UEFI screen opens.
  3. Tap the menu items to test touch, and look closely at the picture for flicker, lines or patches.

If touch fails or the picture is faulty in UEFI, the fault is in the hardware and Windows fixes will not help. Microsoft's advice at this point is a service order.

If everything works in UEFI, the problem is in Windows. Microsoft's next steps are to open Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices, uninstall the HID-compliant touch screen entry, then select Action > Scan for hardware changes so the driver reinstalls. After that, check for updates again, and as a last resort reset the PC. Back up your files before any reset.

You can also run the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit, which you can find by searching Start or download from the Microsoft Store. Open it and follow the on-screen instructions.

How the Display Is Replaced on Studio 2+

Microsoft publishes the full display procedure for Surface Studio 2+, and it shows why this is a workshop job:

  • The Studio is laid face down on an ESD-safe mat after being disconnected from power.
  • The plastic hinge cover at the back is unclipped. Microsoft warns its tabs are fragile, and if any break, the hinge cover must be replaced.
  • Screws come out of the hinge plate, and the copper tape over the two Wi-Fi antennas is peeled back. Microsoft describes that tape as very fragile.
  • Four display connectors are released, then nine hinge screws are removed while the base is supported, and the display separates from the Zero Gravity hinge.
  • The new display is aligned to the hinge, the screws are tightened in stages, the connectors are seated, the antennas and tape are refitted, and the hinge cover is clicked back in.
  • The Surface Diagnostic Toolkit is run to confirm every feature works.

Microsoft lists the display as a single service part for Studio 2+. Glass, panel and touch layer come together, which is why a cracked Studio 2+ screen is a display module replacement. For Studio (1st Gen) and Studio 2, Microsoft does not publish a service guide or self-repair parts, so parts and method depend on the unit and are confirmed at diagnosis.

Protect the Screen Until It Is Fixed

  • Stop pressing on a cracked area; glass fragments can spread the damage and cut fingers.
  • Move the screen gently, holding it by the side as Microsoft describes for the Zero Gravity hinge.
  • Back up your files to OneDrive or an external drive while the Studio still works.
  • Do not press tape or film over the crack if you can avoid it, as residue can get into the edges.

When It Needs a Repair

Book a diagnosis if the fault shows in UEFI, the glass is cracked, the picture changes when you move the screen, or nothing in Windows makes a difference. Repair pages: Surface Studio repair in Dubai, Surface Studio display repair and Surface Studio 2+ repair. If the screen moves badly as well, read the Surface Studio hinge guide, and if you are weighing up the cost of an older unit, see is a Surface Studio worth repairing.

Every repair starts with a free diagnosis and a written quote before any work, with free pickup anywhere in Dubai and a 90-day warranty on the repair. Message us on WhatsApp or use the quote form on this page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a cracked Surface Studio screen be repaired?

Yes. On Surface Studio 2+, Microsoft's service guide replaces the whole display module, which is unscrewed from the Zero Gravity hinge and a new one fitted in its place. For Studio 1st Gen and Studio 2, Microsoft publishes no parts list, so the part and method are confirmed at a free diagnosis before any work starts.

How do I know if my Surface Studio screen problem is hardware?

Use Microsoft's UEFI test. Shut down, hold volume up and press power until the logo appears, then test touch and look at the picture in the UEFI menus. If touch fails or the image flickers or shows lines there, the fault is hardware. If UEFI looks normal, the problem is in Windows or a driver.

Why does my Surface Studio touchscreen not respond in places?

Start with cleaning, using a soft cloth and no glass cleaner. Then reinstall the touch driver from Device Manager and install updates through the Surface app. If touch still fails in the same areas inside UEFI, the touch layer or display is faulty and needs a diagnosis rather than more software fixes.

Can I replace a Surface Studio 2+ screen myself?

Microsoft sells Studio 2+ parts for out-of-warranty self-repair and publishes the steps, but it says the work needs technical skill and proper tools, and damage caused during the repair is not covered by its warranty. The procedure involves fragile hinge cover tabs, antenna copper tape and four display connectors, so most owners hand it to a workshop.
