Key Takeaways

  • Microsoft publishes a service guide and parts list for Surface Studio 2+, and Apple publishes repair manuals for the 24-inch iMac models.
  • Surface Studio 2+ lists its removable SSD, display, thermal module, power supply and motherboard as separate service parts.
  • Microsoft's support date covers drivers and firmware, while Apple's vintage and obsolete status covers hardware service and parts.
  • Surface Studio 1st Gen and Studio 2 have no Microsoft service guide, so their repairs are confirmed at diagnosis.

Surface Studio 2+ and the 24-inch iMac are both all-in-one desktops, so the screen and the computer are one unit and a fault in either takes the whole machine off your desk. Both makers now publish official repair documents: Microsoft has a service guide and a parts list for Surface Studio 2+, and Apple has repair manuals for the 24-inch iMac models from 2021, 2023 and 2024. The real differences are in what each design lets a technician replace, how long each maker supports the machine, and what tools you get for diagnosis.

This guide sticks to what Microsoft and Apple say on their own pages. We repair Surface devices, not Macs, so for an iMac fault go to Apple or an Apple repair provider.

The Two Designs in Brief

  • Surface Studio 2+: a 28-inch PixelSense touchscreen on a Zero Gravity hinge that lowers into Studio Mode for drawing with Surface Pen and Surface Dial. The computer, power supply and cooling sit in the base.
  • iMac (24-inch): a thin all-in-one where the logic board and fans sit behind the display, on a fixed stand or a VESA mount adapter.

The Studio's base-and-hinge layout is the reason its repair steps look different from the iMac's.

What Each Maker Lists as Replaceable

Surface Studio 2+iMac (24-inch, 2024, Four ports)
Official repair documentMicrosoft service guideApple repair manual
DisplayDisplay module, unscrewed from the hingeDisplay removal and reassembly

CoolingThermal moduleFans
StorageRemovable SSD listed as its own partNo separate storage procedure listed
PowerInternal power supply unitNot listed as a separate procedure
OtherFeetStand, VESA mount adapter, USB-C boards, audio board, antennas, flex cables, housing

Two points stand out. On Studio 2+, Microsoft lists the removable SSD as a separate service part, reached after the feet and thermal module come off. After a new SSD is fitted, Microsoft's guide images it with a recovery USB drive made for that model. On the iMac, Apple's manual for the 2024 four-port model breaks the machine into more small boards and cables, and does not list storage as a separate procedure. Check the manual for your exact iMac, as Apple publishes one per model.

Both makers aim self-repair at skilled people working on out-of-warranty machines. Microsoft adds that damage caused during a repair is not covered by its warranty or protection plans, and that its customer support will not help complete a repair.

Diagnostics You Can Run Yourself

  • Surface Studio: the Surface app checks for driver and firmware updates under Help & support, and the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit, found by searching Start or in the Microsoft Store, runs hardware checks. Microsoft's UEFI screen, opened by holding volume up while pressing power, lets you test touch and display outside Windows.
  • iMac: Apple Diagnostics. On Apple silicon, hold the power button until Options appears, release it, then press and hold Command-D. It reports reference codes that Apple explains on its support site.

Both give you something concrete to bring to a repair shop instead of a vague description.

How Long Each Is Supported

The two companies measure support differently:

  • Microsoft sets a driver and firmware servicing period for each Surface. For devices released from 2021 onward it is at least six years from release. Surface Studio 2+ is listed until October 2, 2028. Surface Studio 2 reached its end date on October 2, 2024, and Surface Studio (1st Gen) on November 13, 2021. After that, the device keeps receiving Windows updates under the Windows lifecycle, but no new Surface drivers or firmware.
  • Apple ties hardware service to when it stopped selling a product. It offers service and parts for at least five years after the last sale. Between five and seven years a product is vintage, with parts depending on stock. After seven years it is obsolete and hardware service ends.

So the Microsoft date tells you about software support for the hardware, while the Apple status tells you about parts and service. Neither stops the machine from working on the day it passes.

Warranty

Surface Studio 2+ comes with a one-year limited hardware warranty according to Microsoft's features page. Apple says most of its products come with one year of hardware coverage under its limited warranty, with AppleCare plans to extend it. In both cases, a fault inside the warranty period should go to the maker first.

What This Means in Practice

  • A cracked screen is a display replacement on both, and on the Studio 2+ it is the whole display module.
  • A failed drive on Studio 2+ can be replaced on its own as a listed part. Data on the old drive is a separate question, covered in our Surface Studio data recovery guide.
  • Overheating or fan noise is a thermal module job on the Studio and a fan job on the iMac.
  • Older Studios (1st Gen and Studio 2) have no Microsoft service guide or self-repair parts, so repairs there depend on the unit and are confirmed at diagnosis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a Surface Studio easier to repair than an iMac?

They are built differently. Surface Studio 2+ keeps the computer, cooling and power supply in its base, and Microsoft lists the SSD, display, thermal module, power supply and motherboard as separate parts. Apple's 24-inch iMac manuals break the machine into display, logic board, fans and several smaller boards. Which is easier depends on the fault.

How long will Microsoft support my Surface Studio?

Microsoft lists Surface Studio 2+ for driver and firmware updates until October 2, 2028. Surface Studio 2 reached its end date on October 2, 2024, and the 1st Gen on November 13, 2021. After those dates the Studio keeps getting Windows updates under the Windows lifecycle, but no new Surface drivers or firmware.

Can the SSD be replaced in a Surface Studio 2+?

Yes. Microsoft lists a removable SSD as a service part for Studio 2+. Its service guide reaches it after removing the feet and thermal module, fits a new thermal pad, and then images the new drive with a recovery USB made for that model. The data on the old drive does not move across automatically.

Do you repair iMacs as well as Surface Studios?

No. We are a Surface repair workshop, so we work on Surface Studio, Surface Pro, Surface Laptop, Surface Book and Surface Go devices. For an iMac, Apple's own support and Apple repair providers are the right route. For any Surface Studio, the diagnosis is free and you get a written quote before any work.
