Key Takeaways
- A heart over the battery icon means smart charging is holding the battery at 80 percent, which protects it and is not a fault.
- On the Intel Surface Pro 9, turning off Display Power Savings in Intel Graphics Command Center can stop screen flicker.
- If the keyboard works in UEFI but not in Windows, the cause is software and Reset this PC with Keep my files is the next step.
- Faults that also appear in UEFI, a lifting screen or charging failure on both ports need a repair.
Many Surface Pro 9 faults that look like failing hardware have a settings or software cause: a battery that stops charging at 80 percent, a screen that flickers on dark pages, a keyboard that stops after an update, or a 5G connection that will not start. Each has a check you can do at home in a few minutes. This guide follows Microsoft's own steps for each one, then lists the signs that point to a part that needs replacing.
First, Know Which Surface Pro 9 You Have
Microsoft made the Surface Pro 9 in two versions, and some fixes apply to one but not the other. The Surface app shows which one you have under Device information.
| Feature | Surface Pro 9 (Intel) | Surface Pro 9 with 5G |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 12th Gen Intel Core | Microsoft SQ 3 |
| Windows | Windows 11 | Windows 11 for Arm-based PCs |
| USB-C ports | Two, USB4 / Thunderbolt 4 | Two, USB-C 3.2 |
| Cellular | None | 5G with nano SIM and eSIM |
Both versions have a Surface Connect port, a 13-inch PixelSense Flow display with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz, a removable SSD, and support for the Surface Slim Pen 2 and the Surface Pro Signature Keyboard. Both charge through USB-C or Surface Connect.
Battery Stops at 80 Percent or Runs Down Quickly
- Look for a heart icon over the battery icon in the taskbar. That is smart charging, which holds the battery at 80 percent when the Surface stays plugged in for long periods or runs warm, to slow battery wear. It is not a fault.
- To get a full charge, open the Surface app, go to Battery & charging and, under Smart charging, choose the option to charge fully. Setting Charging mode back to Adaptive turns protection on again.
- Check the power settings. On Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Power & battery and apply any Energy recommendations. Microsoft notes that battery life varies a great deal with settings and use.
- Test both charging ports. If it will not charge on Surface Connect, try a USB-C charger, and the other way round. If one port works, the fault is that port or that charger.
Signs of a battery fault rather than a setting: the screen lifting from the frame, a bulge in the case, the Surface shutting down while showing plenty of charge, or no charging on either port with chargers that work on other devices.
Screen Flicker
- Turn off content-based brightness: Settings > System > Display > Brightness, set Change brightness based on content to Off.
- Intel version: install Intel Graphics Command Center from the Microsoft Store, go to System > Power and set Display Power Savings to Off, then Panel Self Refresh to Off if it continues. These settings do not apply to the 5G version.
- Try a fixed refresh rate. Under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, choose a different refresh rate and see if the flicker stops.
- Restart the graphics driver with Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B.
- Run the UEFI test. Shut down, wait 10 seconds, hold volume up, press and release power, and release volume up when the UEFI screen appears. Flicker in UEFI means hardware. A steady screen means software, so install updates and reinstall the display drivers.
The Surface screen flickering guide has the full sequence.
Keyboard or Signature Keyboard Not Responding
Microsoft's keyboard steps, in order:
- Install updates from the Surface app (Help & support).
- Detach the keyboard and look at the connector strip on both parts for dirt, debris or damage.
- Force a restart: shut down from Start > Power > Shut down, then hold the power button for about 20 seconds until the logo appears.
- Reattach the keyboard so all the magnets touch the bottom edge of the Surface.
- Press Caps and Fn a few times. If their lights do not come on, Microsoft treats that as a likely hardware fault.
- If the lights work but typing does not, test in UEFI. If the keyboard and touchpad work there but not in Windows, the cause is software; reset with Reset this PC, Keep my files and Cloud download.
On the 5G version, Microsoft also lists the Surface Pro X Keyboard and Surface Pro X Signature Keyboard as compatible. See the Surface Pro Type Cover not working guide for more.
Wi-Fi Drops or Will Not Connect
- Check that Wi-Fi is on and Airplane mode is off, and re-enter the network password.
- Test the network on another device. If nothing connects, restart the router and modem.
- Run the network troubleshooter under Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Install the latest Surface drivers and firmware. If the Surface has no connection at all, download the driver package for Surface Pro 9 on another computer, copy it across on a USB drive and install it.
If Wi-Fi disappears from Settings entirely, Windows is not detecting the adapter. More steps are in the Surface Pro Wi-Fi not working guide.
5G Version: No Cellular Connection
- Install updates from the Surface app first, and restart.
- If Windows says Insert a SIM after you have just fitted one, wait at least 30 seconds.
- If the message stays, remove the SIM tray with the tool from the box and check the card is seated correctly.
- If the SIM is still not recognised, ask your mobile operator to check the account or replace the card. For eSIM, the profile comes from the operator.
- 5G is not available everywhere, and compatibility depends on the operator, so check coverage before assuming a fault.
Will Not Turn On or Screen Stays Black
Surface Pro 9 uses the 20-second force restart: hold the power button until the logo appears. Before that, press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B in case the Surface is running with the display off. The Surface Pro not turning on guide and the Surface Pro black screen guide cover the rest.
When It Needs a Repair
Book a check if:
- Flicker, a black screen or a dead keyboard also shows in UEFI.
- The screen is lifting or the case is bulging.
- It will not charge on either port with chargers that work elsewhere.
- The SIM is not detected after your operator has confirmed the card is fine.
- It stopped after a drop or a spill.
Microsoft lists the SSD as removable on both versions, which helps when data needs to be recovered from a Surface with another fault. If the drive is encrypted, have your BitLocker recovery key ready. Every repair starts with a free diagnosis and a written quote before any work, with free pickup anywhere in Dubai and a 90-day warranty on the repair. Most screen, battery and port jobs are finished the same day; board-level work usually takes 48 to 72 hours. Message us on WhatsApp or use the quote form. Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my Surface Pro 9 stop charging at 80 percent?
That is smart charging, shown by a heart over the battery icon. It holds the battery at 80 percent when the Surface stays plugged in for long periods or runs warm, to slow battery wear. To charge fully, open the Surface app, go to Battery & charging and pause smart charging. Setting Charging mode to Adaptive turns it back on.
What is the difference between the Surface Pro 9 Intel and 5G versions?
The Intel version has a 12th Gen Intel Core processor and two Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports. The 5G version has a Microsoft SQ 3 processor, runs Windows 11 for Arm-based PCs, has two USB-C 3.2 ports and adds 5G with a nano SIM and eSIM. Both share the 13-inch PixelSense Flow display and Signature Keyboard support.
Why is my Surface Pro 9 keyboard not working?
Start with updates from the Surface app, then detach the keyboard, check both connectors for debris, force a restart and reattach it. Press Caps and Fn: if their lights stay off, the keyboard or connector is likely faulty. If the lights work and the keyboard works in UEFI but not in Windows, the cause is software.
When should a Surface Pro 9 be repaired?
Get it checked when a fault also shows in UEFI, the screen lifts or the case bulges, it will not charge on either port, or it stopped after a drop or spill. Diagnosis is free and you get a written quote before any work, with free pickup anywhere in Dubai and a 90-day warranty on the repair.
